SSD back-up for firmware updates

Ok I'm going to ask another stupid question.

Apparently you are supposed to back up to a external flash drive before updating firmware on a SSD in case of loss of data so you can reboot from flash

What exactly do I need to back up.

My Windows7 is oem so do I need to back that up? all of my mass data will be on HDD and stored in cloud.

if you have a spare hdd or external drive use macrium reflect to clone your ssd to it,update firmware and clone it back if needed

usually its fine when you update the fw,but better to be safe than sorry
