Hi
Anyone got a SSD running on this board

Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58

if so which is the best one with out any problems - thinking of getting one with windows 7 when it comes out

also I know they are small 2.5 or something do they come with chassis to fit them into a normal HDD slot in the PC case.

Thanks for this chaps.

what's your budget, how much stuff do you need to store?

All the drives on OCUK should work on any motherboard with SATA, and work at full speed on any motherboard with SATA-300 (which your motherboard has).

They don't all come with adaptors, you'd want one of these : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-000-SR&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=72
or one of these : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-059-AK&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=72
or you can just velcro tape them somewhere out of the way in your case if you want.

Now thats more like it - thanks for that. I only aks because some people have complained of "stuttering" or some that some drives are not as fast as others. From what I can gather the intels are hitting the sweet spot in terms of major speed increase? It will only be for the OS will use a couple of F1's for storage and back up. I reckon 80 gbs should do it to allow for a few games etc on there.
Budget £250 -300. Thanks.

If you can find it in stock the Intel 80Gb mainstream is your best bet.

I have a 128Gb G.Skill Falcon that I am still very happy with a few months down the line.

None of the drives that OCUK sell at the moment suffer from stuttering, and they are all at roughly the same performance level apart from the kingston value range, which are half the speed on big files and much less than half the speed on small files.

I'm happy with my Intel 80GB G2, but it can be difficult finding stock at the moment.
For that budget, why not get two Crucial m225 64GB and put them in RAID0? That'll give you 128GB of storage and it'll be much faster than any single drive. Your motherboard has a great onboard controller for RAID0.

cool thanks seems like a reviewer had probs getting this to work with Lian-Li case which I have and uses same screw bolt slot mechanism.
Sorry to be a pain but I was wondering briefly what changes need to be made.
I see updating firmware is important? Hows it done?
Defrag not needed but there's talk of Trim and Wiper - needed at all?
What would you advise a SSD owner to do, small list etc.
Cheers.

Gone for it! Love new credit cards LOL.
Had a read seem as good as gonna get for that so looking forward to these.
Any tips for those new to SSD's?

OCUK stock this - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-059-AK&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=72 - which does the same thing (two 2.5" drives in a single 3.5" bay)

i got one of these for my Samsung PB22-J 128GB. Fits nicely but it doesn't fit very good into the Fortress case. the harddrive holders aren't like in othercases so your limited to where to screw it.

but because it's so light and with no vibrations it doesn't really matter.

as for the holder its self it is a solid piece of kit and for £6.99 it's a steal

How do you find your sammy?

Got one, just waiting on Mr Postie dropping it off.
Was going to reconfig the system and have it for boot/app drive.

Is there any firmware updating or such needed?

Thanx.

I've a Samsung as well, and TBH I prefer the Crucials.

There's no confirmed firmware updates for existing drives to support TRIM. No way for end users to upgrade to the latest firmware - basically users have been stuck on the same firmware that shipped even though newer versions have been released on newer drives.

Also there's conflicting information on whether GC is currently enabled or not - doesn't seem to be on mine anyway, but the deterioration in performance hasn't been too bad on that machine anyway.

Aw no, I just got a new 128Gb Sammy too!
I'll fire it up with Win 7 when it comes next week and see how it goes.

I thought these Sammy's didnt need any firmware updates, TRIM support is already on it?

GC support is supposedly on them. But I only found contradictory information on which firmware revisions do or don't have GC. I haven't seen any difference from leaving the machine idle for 48hrs to see if the GC kicked in either.

There's no confirmed firmware updates that users can flash either, even though there are at least 3 known firmwares in the wild - so Samsung have updated something, but are not letting users of older drives update it.

There's some rumours of an update being provided to allow TRIM support, but they are just rumours and Corsair who have a Samsung based drive are denying knowing anything about it - and they are pretty involved in their forums.

All that said, they're not bad drives, it's just I get a feeling of being left out in the cold by Samsung when it comes to support and updates.

Ah right.
Apparently if the Firmware version number is 18C1Q or later then GC support is enabled already.

Just checked and mine is 1AH1Q so looks ok there.
