SSD Bricked?

I've a feeling my ssd is bricked, after a year and a half of no problems thursday I booted up and the system was having some problems "dwm.exe can't run" and suchforth, no problem, I thought. Then it just died, rebooted and wouldn't detect the drive, so I left it.

Next day I take it out, reseat the cables, turn it on, just about get into windows again in safe mode so I take any files I desperately need off and go about fixing it, usual suspects system file checker, chkdisc, startup repair, system restore and eventually give up and go about a reinstall.

I reinstall the first time fine but then it dies again after updating a few things, odd, I go to reinstall again and it's not letting me do that, the drive is just disappearing off the list after a while.

Then after a while stopped showing up at all.

So I took it out and plugged it into my laptop (secondary sata port), seemingly it will only show in the bios and not in disc mgmt or similar (I use the same SSD as a boot drive for my laptop so I can't forsee compatability issues).

Am I right in thinking it's a brick?

How do you expect anyone to reveal nuggets of information when you don't even mention which SSD it is.

Even though I sorta agree with you in this instance the make and model of the SSD is irrelevant... it sounds like its starting to die.

The make and model might be relevant.

If it's an OCZ, then it stands a very good chance that it is a brick.

If it's any other make, then there may be a chance that a firmware update (if possible) might solve the issue.

It may well be that someone else has had similar problems with the same make/model of SSD, and therefore may be able to give some specific advice.

Also, it's can be useful to prospective SSD purchasers to know which models seem to be less reliable. Obviously not very scientific, but if a certain make or model keeps appearing to be causing trouble, it might help someone decide to avoid purchasing it.

Sandisk Ultra

To be honest I figured from the fact it was showing in the bios and not as a drive on a booted pc was going to be a brick but I was just looking for confirmation, see if those symptoms generally describe a bricked drive.

I'm probably stating the obvious, but have you made sure you have the latest firmware installed ? (Assuming you can access the drive to see the firmware version).

I have heard of "issues" with Sandforce based SSDs, and I believe that firmware updates can sometimes resolve problems.

Not able to access the drive to do firmware no, plus I don't see why it'd work for a year and a half find then suddenly decide "nope" if it were firmware.

I agree, it does seem to defy logic, but I`ve had a fair few problems that don't seem to make sense.

Didn't the M4's suffer from some sort of issue after a certain period of use ? That was solved by a firmware upgrade.

I'm not suggesting that a firmware upgrade will solve your problem, or even that there is a firmware update for your SSD. However, if it were my SSD, it's one of the first things I'd look into.
