SSD - Can you tell the difference...

I'm wonder if it possible to tell the difference in real life performance between a "cheap" SSD and a performance one, example Kingston SSDNOW 64GB v OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB. On paper there should be massive difference but just wondered if it really visible or can only be detected in benchmarks.

really early /cheaper SSD's were actually slower than a normal harddisk, but now they make them look silly.

but i still wouldnt go to cheap, and would stick to a decent brand

Problem with speed in this sense I'll highlight.

A program loads in 4 seconds and lets call this 1x. With twice the performance its 2 seconds and is very noticeable. With a doubling in performance again its 1 second and is less noticeable. Double performance again and its down to 0.5 seconds.

So as you can see, unless you increase the load (i.e. a larger program) there are diminishing returns to speed.

Things like browsers, folders, small applications etc. load instantly on my old Samsung SSD which by today's standards has very poor random read speeds (modern drives are at least 10x better). Will I see an improvement on a modern drive here? No.

I bought a ocz 64gb vertex and i have been very pleased with the speed of my pc since. I paid £160 for it and the very next day the vertex 2 was released for exactly the same price (nearly) and double the write speed. :|

If i had to buy now i would buy the vertex 2.

You get so used to the SSD that when I go to another PC running off SATA it feels so slow. But to your question. I am not sure if there would be a visible difference between a vertex 1 and vertex 2. As the load times on vertex 1 are already super fast, so photoshop loads in 2seconds and on the vertex 2 is loads in 1.5seconds for example. But it is one of those, you might as well get the vertex 2 with the super write speeds.

You should have returned it under distance selling regulations
