Hi guys, was looking at buying my first SSD to use as my main etc. However I'm a little stuck on what brand to choose, I was going to grab a 512gb/480gb size drive as I could just clone by current drive over and be done with it.

I found the OCZ Arc 100 Series 480gb drives reduced to £120 on another site, however I was wondering what people thought of these drives?

I have 4x Crucial M500 and 2x ARC 100 inboud.

Crucial recently introduced MX200 range, not sure how pricing will be like, but if it will be as good as MX100, I'd grab that.

ARC 100 seems to be a decent drive too, that's why I got mine.

crucial/Samsung/intel in that order for performance/value for money

crucial mx100 512gb would be my choice if I was buying now,get free adaptor/mounting bracket aswell

ocz have bad rep for reliability

there is old OCZ and new OCZ.

I had vertex 2 back in the day, when 120GB was 200 quid, never had any trouble and still sold it on, but yes the failure rates on certain models, especially the budget ones like Petrol, were really too bad. part of the reason they went bankrupt.

new OCZ is a different story. Not ever sure why they kept the brand, these have almost nothing common with old OCZ, maybe apart from some knowhow on the controller used. Even their RMA process is really good now.

the only real downside of ARC 100 (if priced right) is slightly higher power consumption which might matter with laptops, but not with desktops.

Still I would wait for MX200 pricing first.

Was quite a big fan of Intel SSDs in the past - they've always been solid for me. I'm using Samsung (really good except the whole issue over performance degradation) and Kingston Hyper X 3K (which is fairly good) just avoid the V300s.

Never had that much joy with Crucial myself but probably just been unlucky.

SSDs seem to be a bit of a minefield :S

Hmm well I was hoping to upgrade soon, how long till the mx200 range comes out? Is there going to be a massive improvement or is it more them knocking the mx100 down in price?

Certainly old OCZ had poor firmware/controller and high failure rate, but since then they are on par with everyone else, the old controllers are long since gone. (Always backup whatever drive you have)

Also I just RMA two old Vertex 2 120Gb over 2 years into their 3 year warrantee and got two OCZ Vertex 460A SATA III 120Gb as replacements for the cost of £3 postage to UK RMA.

The big difference is Toshiba/New OCZ make their own NAND flash and the support is very good.

Very happy with my mx100, you may even be able to pick one up cheap in the coming weeks due to the mx200 being released.

To address your question, the Arc 100 is a good mid-range drive. They are now owned by Toshiba and use their NAND.
