Hi all,

Stupid question. I was about to order a new 2TB SSD to put in my PC, but I’ve just discovered that my case only has two 3.5 inch bays, and they are both in use. However, there is still a decent amount of unused space. Obviously an optical drive with moving parts needs to be mounted in a stable slot in order to get best performance, but does that matter with an SSD? As long as it’s connected up, if it’s loose then does it make any difference?

My son's pc case is a sugo SG13 and I just blue tack the SSD securely onto the bottom of the case.

As the SSD contains no moving parts, you can pretty much place it anywhere as long as it is secure.

You don't want it smacking about if you move the case, but apart from that, doesn't really matter. The cables can be enough to keep it in place, if it doesn't have much room to move about.

My friend has a couple that are just dangling by thier cables lol!
I wouldn't recommend it but it's not caused him any problems as the drives hardly weigh anything.

Thanks folks! One new SSD now secured to the bottom of my case with blu-tack. Plumbed in and working. Now I need to uninstall and reinstall a bunch of games…

If you can, try to have a separate SSD for your OS - makes it much easier to revert back to a back up image or fresh OS installation if anything goes wrong without having to worry about your games library :)

I've used sticky back velcro on some builds and zip ties on other. A zip tie through the holes in the the case works great.

Get an M2 for the OS if you haven't already.
