SSD failures

Some are more reliable than others I think, though on the whole they are still more reliable than standard mechanical HDDs. OCZ seem to get the most compaints about reliability in my experience, whereas I have rarely seen anyone compain about a samsung 830 or crucial m4 for instance. That doesn't mean OCZ drives are very unreliable though, it just means that they are more so than their competition. And dont forget, reliable or no it is always possible to be unlucky

With mechanical drives you usually get warning signs before failure, giving you time to back-up your data.

When an SSD drive fails you lose everything instantly. For this reason I run a complete daily backup of my SSDs.

I have only started using SSD's recently. I had issues updating the firmware when I got them, but I now have them in RAID 0 and couldn't ask for better performance!

i have got to admit i have a crucial c300 64gb had it for over a year and not a single fault and an m4 and that is my recent buy and no faults at all

i have heard a lot of complaints about ocz performance unreliable

Only had one issue with an old Kingston which became faulty after a secure erase (possibly my fault).
Kingston replaced it free after two years use so I was happy.

Crucial have also been helpful when I contacted them for tech advice.

Sandisk Extreme been running very nice.

So can't throw any bad comments into the mix.

I've just sent back an OCZ Vertex 3 which stopped working about a week after I got it. It had been working fine, installed Windows 8 no problem, then one day I turned on the laptop and the drive wasn't detected. Looked in the BIOS, nothing shown, so I took the drive out and put it into a USB caddy but it still wouldn't detect.

I did some googling and it seems to be a known issue with that model, and once it happens you can't do anything other than send it back. :(

If you stay away from dodgy brands reliability seems to be very good. We've deployed about 120-ish SSDs for clients over the last 18 months and had just 3 fail, one of which was almost certainly taken out by a dying PSU.

That's probably a best case, though. The drives are a mix of Intel, Crucial and Kingston, no OCZ garbage, and we don't use a drive until it's been on the market for at least 6 months so most of the big firmware bugs have been caught.

More anecdotal.........

I read that Intel drives were pretty solid before I bought my X-25M 80gb, nearly 3 years ago.

It had a pretty easy life until a few months ago when it started to play up and "died". Intel replaced it (took 10 days) and the replacement drive is running fine.

I installed an OCZ Vertex 2E in a friend's PC about 2 years ago. Recently it developed a problem, which didn't lose all of her data, but required a format and clean install. It has gone into a spare XP based machine, and I replaced it with a Crucial M4 256gb.

I`ve installed about 10 Crucial M4s in total in the past 12 months, and not had a problem with one. Yet.

Tried a Samsung 830 in a machine last week, and I`ve got another to install in the next few days. Hoping for no problems.

i think the big test will be a few years down the line, whether SSD's from 3-5 years ago are still working fine.
im still running hdd only though so no firsthand experience, mostly cause untill i can get a 300GB SSD for under £100 its too much hassle for me to consider really

I had a crucial m225 windows started corrupting and after fixing happened again. Drive swapped for m4 and no issues since.

my first Vertex died after 5 months, replacement still working well.
put off from buying OCZ after seeing died ssd threads and 'oh look it's ocz again'

have a samsung 830 in my desktop (arrived today) now and moved the vertex to my netbook.

I had 3 OCZ Vertex 2 drives die.

The first I RMA'd for a replacement, which arrived quickly. When the replacement died 2 days later i had a much harder time with support. Finally they refunded me.
Shortly after that a different vertex died as well!

I replaced all OCZ with Crucial M4s on recommendation of this forum. No problems since.
Needless to say I am never buying OCZ again.

ouch OCZ seem to be really bad they were supposed to be good and reliable

since when?^^
i think the ocz 4s are better its just that sandforce

my agility3 in my laptop i have abused for 2 years now and its been so good,
i think when theres reports of lots vertex4s being returned then its time to slam them ><
