The new firmware for a range of OCZ SSD's is now available from the main site.

(Firmware 1.24)

I am currently on 1.23 and wonder whether this will give me any significant improvement? Bearing that in mind im using a motherboard that cannot run AHCI but drive stills performs fantastically. :D (P5N-E SLI, 650i Chipset)

If you're not using AHCI I don't think you can flash it anyway...unless that's just the Toolbox and you can flash using a boot disk, I can't remember.

I just tried Flashing my 60Gb Vertex 2E which was on 1.23 to 1.24. Seemed to go through the process fine, downloading the package I pointed it at within the folder I downloaded then reboots but Crystaldiskinfo says I'm still on 1.23.

I have AHCI enabled within my P5K's BIOS and the registry mod is showing "0" as it should be in msahci. I just tried flashing it again with the same result. :(

I tried doing it via the Toolbox but I get this :-

You should really flash from an OS other than the one on the SSD, or use a Windows 7 32-bit repair disc with the SSDUpdate utility.

Ta, so I'd need to take the SSD out of the PC, hook it up via a SATA/USB external enclosure and connect to another PC and flash it from there?.

Indeed.

or...... clone your current SSD onto another mechanical HD. Always handy to have a backup HD like this to boot from in an emergency anyway (well it's stood me in good stead over the years). Then use this to boot from and have your SSD connected as a secondary drive. Certainly worked for me.

PS. Consensus of opinion on OCZ forum/s is that flashing it as a secondary is the most reliable way (IE. less likely to have problems etc.)

So whip the SSD out and hook it up to another PC, flash it from there then, is the safest way to do it?. I've got 3 PC's and a 2 x laptops at home so I've got plenty of scope to do so. :p

Yep. It's what I would recommend. Have a read of the link I posted (post no. 2 I think). Should be easy that way.

Though to be totally honest. I'm not going to bother to move from 1.23 to 1.24.

Issues resolved since version 1.23

• Fixed rare corner case where sequential write with IOMETER 2006 could cause errors

As from as far as I can see, it only sorts one fairly obscure problem. Not worth the hassle me thinks.

Good luck.

I was thinking the same m8, I'll just leave be for now and stick with 1.23. Cheers for the link though, Bookmarked for future ref. ;)

Great minds think alike.

Got to admit that I originally rather scared myself reading the OCZ forum prior to buying my first Vertex drive. There seemed to be quite a few problems popping up (especially with older motherboards like mine). Though when you dug a little deeper, quite a few appeared to be because people had not done their homework before purchasing. I definitely don't think they are quite as plug-and-play as mechanical hard drives (yet).

i'm trying to Flashing my 90Gb Vertex 2 from 1.23 to 1.24, i've tried within windows 7 but it says no drives found. so i tried booting from the Windows 7 32-bit disc and choosing repair option then the SSDUpdate utility in the Command Prompt but the SSDUpdate utility still says no drives found,.

the sata mode is on AHCI so i don't understand why it says no drives found. i've even tried IDE mode but it's still the same.

any ideas why?

If you've not had a look at this thread on the OCZ forum, then I would suggest it's a good place to start.

Even with SSDupdate, the recommended way to flash, is with your drive as a secondary.

Quote:
"I will give the same warning as the 1.23 firmware (if you are not already on it): I highly recommend installing this update as a secondary drive, installing this update from Windows running on the target drive will result in er attic behaviour."

Other thought would be:

"On launch, the Update Tool will scan for drives. IMPORTANT: The Update Tool requires administrator privileges. No drives will be discovered if administrator privileges are not enabled." So on launch, run with Admin... unless UAC completely switched off.

Not tried to flash with a 32 bit Windows disk before. So not quite sure why it wont work.
Though to quote again from the above link:

"This procedure will most likely also work if you have a Windows 7 or Vista 32-bit (NOT 64-bit) Install or Recovery CD/DVD and a USB stick."

Notice the use of the expression "will most likely also work".

Flashed two drives in secondary mode and had no problems though.

PS. If it was me, I would not bother. The changes from 1.23 to 1.24 are very minor.
And if it aint broke... don't try and fix it.

ok, i've finally flashed it.

i uninstalled Acronis then ssdupdate seen the drive, then i had to rollback to the Standard AHCI Controller so it would flash.
