I suspected my old hard drive would fail, and sure enough windows 7 reported that the hard drive would fail and won't install on it.

Need an SSD, I've seen a OCZ 240Gb SSD for under £90. Same price as a 120Gb, it would be his only drive for now. I can't see anything wrong with getting the SataII as his motherboard only supports SataII anyway, and should still be faster than a HDD.

Any suggestions?

If he can only support SATA2 then no point in paying more for a SATA3 drive IMO, however the SATA3 drives will be newer tech, so you may want to check up on reliability for the newer ones compared to that OCZ one (not familiar with it, so can't really give you any info myself)

He ordered the Sata2 240Gb, if it fails at least he has warranty and because it's discontinued maybe even get upgraded if it does. I have an 830 256Gb myself, would have ordered him a Crucial M4 but the 120Gb isn't really enough space. Thanks.
