SSD for OS/gaming?

I recently upgraded to a 4770k from a Phenom Quad.

I have not purchased an HDD for a long time, thus all my drives are 5+ year old mechanical drives.

Am I "bottlenecking" my system by not using an SSD?

Obviously, I do not expect it to increase FPS (Or would it) but could it be holding back the CPU for general use if that makes sense as in just not being as quick as it could.

Also, would having a seperate SSD for OS and another for games make it quicker or would lumping them on one be fine?

Thanks.

Imo and i suspect many others will agree a SSD is the best upgrade you make for you pc in many a long year.
It wont increase FPS but will speed up loading times and make general use 'snappier'..

Am looking at the 250GB Samsung EVO.

BUT, would two 120GB be better?

Speed wise there's no real reason to go for two drives, theoretically yes but I doubt you'd notice the speed. Get the extra 10Gb it'll be more useful.

SSD is the best PC upgrade in the past 10 years, makes a phenomenal difference even on old kit.

Wouldn't matter, just take up more space in your case and use more Sata ports, i'd if I had the money I'd just the 250gb, then upgrade to another one if you feel like your running out of space.

Most of us grab a small SSD and a big SSD, in my case i've got a 60gb intel 330, for my O/S and main apps (Office 10, Sony Vegas), then get another SSD for games you play most, i've yet to do it as money needs to go elsewhere, and a 1TB HDD for everything else.

SSD = Best upgrade you'll ever make :)

I've got 2x Samsungs, would 128GB and one 250. Windows and non steam games on the 128 and Steam games on the 250 along with some Hyper-V servers...
Definitely worth just getting a big one instead of intentionally buying multiple.

I'm sporting a 128GB and a 256GB curcial M4s. 128 for the OS and normal applications I want to run fast and the 256 purely for games :3

got some mech drives then for like media etc..

can't advise enough how awesome SSDs are!!

I was in the same boat so I grabbed a 120gb SSD for BF4 and my OS, oh my god what a difference, using a PC without an SSD now is horrible! Best upgrade I've made since jumping to an i5 :)

What did you upgrade from? Can't say I've ever made an upgrade that comes close to what an SSD does, they're a complete game changer.
Going from a single core AMD64 to a dual core was pretty epic for generally usability of the machine but the SSD is something else.

Just having a quick look at the SSD page, you can get a Crucial M500 240GB for £107.99, I mean thats good money, why is it that cheap?

just time passing, general reduction in price, think my 256 cost me £135 last year some time?

better was when I spent about the same on the 64GB SSD... and now it's pretty much half the price or maybe even a little less! :p

(oh yea... I did have a 64gb and a 128gb originally but something went odd... think windows boot sector was ****** and it wasn't picking up the SSD, so I bought the 256 and used the 128 for the OS instead of games. now the 64GB works and I used it as a portable drive as it weighs nothing :P )

SSD is a worthwhile update without a doubt, but re. the whole two drives or one drive issue, surely you could just use one drive and split it into two partitions?

I think most people have done it for cost reasons.

My first SSD was a 64Gb, which I used only to store some of my most demanding games, disk-access wise.

Next came a 128Gb SSD which is now booting Windows, and has a few other games on it. I'll probably end up with a 3rd at some point and load most of my in-use Steam library onto it, the only reason I'm not doing that right now is the cost.

Eventually the 64Gb SSD will probably end up refreshing an old laptop for a couple of more years of use.

250GB EVO ordered.

Thanks all.

The i7 was not a "WOW" moment regarding upgrades to be honest, more incremental so am hoping this is.

My last true "WOW" upgrade was my first 3D accelerator. Anything since then has not matched up.
