SSD for OS/gaming?

SSD's all the way. Mechanical's are for sadists.

I tried playing Skyrim on a HDD after running it for months on a SSD. That didn't last long. Big Mechanical drives certainly have their uses, but gaming ain't one anymore.

Hi all.

Forgot about this thread.

Well, I got the 250GB Samsung EVO, a few days later, I ordered a 120GB for the Office PC :p

Yes, games, especially ARMA 3 have considerable load time improvements and in general, gaming is much more fun as less time waiting and the OS (Windows 8 x64) improvements are mind blowing. I have found alt-tabbing to be MUCH MORE responsive.

A superb upgrade.

How long have you all had your SSD's I had mine for a few months before the flash memory busted and I insisted on a refund.

I could have just been unlucky as ocz are usually ok in terms of quality.

SSD is the way forward a 256GB is the least you want for OS and for your new game's.
Any old steam games l move them to my back up 500GB HD using a handy tool called Steam Mover.

Last week l up graded my 830 SSD to a 500GB 840 EVO at a bargain price of £175 as l was running out of space. But also its way faster than the 830 and would recommend Samsung anytime.

My 1st SSD was a OCZ Agility nice but very unreliable had three fail and got a refund in the end.

So I take it OCZ are to be avoided in regards to SSD's if its not too much to ask, expecially as its someone elses thread, could you recommend a more reliable brand?

EDIT
ignore me I missed the samsung at the end

(If a Don wants to delete this post m happy with that)

anther site has put up Seagate 600 series 480gb ssd for about £160 a few times, prices are really starting to come down

I've found DayZ, Arma 3, BF4 loads sooooo much faster since i've had my V300, I'm normally the first few to join a game on BF4 which makes jacking the AA easier, if it wasn't for my rubbish connection, I'd probably be first in all games.

Massive difference, and it makes it better knowing I only spent £40 for a new 120gb SSD.

My SSD is amazing so much so I felt like slitting my wrists each time I used the wifes PC. Needless to say she is also sporting an SSD.

I know it's a technicality... but prices aren't going down, capacity is going up :p

Every time I look the cheapest SSD is about £80, but whereas once that was for 32 gig, then 64, then 128... now you can get 256 for just over £100.

That doesn't help those of us who want a fast, but modestly sized, and reasonably priced SSD.

Bought a Samsung ssd 1t in one of the recent daily deals, ready for my new rig:)
I do have a 120gb already in my current rig just for the OS and the odd game and its a huge difference.

Going from a fast (Western Digital VelociRaptor 10k 150GB) drive to a Crucial M4 made day to day use seem like I had a new PC

To let to know what I mean instead of benchmarks - A quick error scan in HD tune on the WD Velociraptor took 25 seconds. On the M4 it takes 1 second!

I built my last PC with an SSD to see what all the fuss was about, anything with a mechanical drive now feels like a dinosaur. Boot up in seconds and everything loads extremely quickly.

Current PC has two, one for OS and one for just games.

It is THE best upgrade you can do.

I also wish for an opinion, i have a very...old harddrive 320gb :D...which still runs for some odd reason.

On top of a windows + various programs SSD at 120gb...however would it be more than ok to just buy say...a 500GB SSD to replace both? (obviously for performance reasons its really 375GB or 75% capacity)

SSD is the single best upgrade you can make for any computer. They are somewhere between 100 and 1000 times faster for general usage (IOPS). In special cases, such as large sequential files (e.g. movies) then they are about 2 times faster.

The big downside is when they break, they break bigtime. Make sure you regularly backup anything important onto something that breaks more gracefully.

I'd buy:

Samsung 500GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - £209.99
+ Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM - £65.99

Use the Green as an archive/backup/storage drive and go nuts with the SSD as main drive.

You can save £30 by getting a Crucial SSD same size
You can save £20 by getting a 1TB HD
