I been hearing people giving advice about putting OS on SSD and then run games/apps from HDD

I was thinking would it not be best for having OS on standard HDD and run your games/apps from the SSD because if your playing a game you want the read/write times of the SSD?? anyways if anyone could help me would be great.

Many Thanks

Best to have OS and games on the SSD imo, so best to get one around 128gb. I just use the old fashioned HD for movies, music, tv shows etc..

Yeah both is best, but tbh I spend more time using other apps (or rebooting if I'm fiddling with system tweaks/clocks/etc) than I do loading games. I can wait a few seconds to load a map, but shaving 30s off my boot time and having a very responsive OS are more important to me. Up to you though.

Am I likely to get much of a boost over a raid setup? My new rig has a 64gb SSD which I was planning to use mainly for the OS, and use my old raid setup of dual 160gb 7200 WD's for games and programs (all other data held on the storage drive).

The reasoning is that whilst you may have to wait for a level to load, when in-game, you aren't effected by HDD performance. And the loading process for games is heavily optimised and streamlined, so even with an SDD the load times may not be massively improved. Also many games have open environments with loading on-the-fly that is unnoticable even with a HDD.

On the other hand, putting the OS on SDD massively improves boot time and overall OS responsiveness.

So putting the OS on the SDD is a must, then stick your most used apps or games on any space you have left.

If you really want fast game loading performance, get 2 smaller SSDs, load the OS on one, and install the games to the other. Or RAID them.

I've decided to join the ranks and got myself a ssd for my new rig. I'll be able to say in a couple of days how good it is.
