My database guys have asked me to buy a couple of new hard drives for our SQL server. I've never used SSDs myself yet so can anyone advise whether they'd be a good idea in a server or should I stick to decent fast SATA drives intead?

Been considering this question seriously for an oracle db. Problem is (I beleive) OCZ don't guarantee their MLC drives for enterprise use, not sure about intel. The intel drives with their huge iops and good sequential reads would be great for db data/index files, control files and page files they also have a 5 year warranty. Not so good for redo files/archived redo that have a large quantity of sequential writes or if you constantly writes large sequential data to your db files. For overall good performance/life expectancy you need SLC and that pushes up the budget massively.
