Hi guys

I bought a new SSD a couple of weeks ago from ocuk, the SSD is a crucial 128GB. I installed windows 7 and some games then was having problems with some things so i formatted the SSD again by the method of putting in the windows 7 DVD and format as you would do to a HDD.

Since doing that my SSD keeps freezing mainly on windows 7 start up and shut down. But can be random and freeze when im trying to save a file to the SSD or in heaven benchmark or a game. The freeze lasts upto 1 min and the whole time the LED on the front of my case is lit.

Iv taken my HDD's out to see if they were conficting somehow but that did not help. Iv tried taking my anti virus off but no help either.

Im a bit stumped as to what maybe causing this as with it being so new it should not have any issues i guess. I dont know if it was the way i formatted the SSD or what ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and then hopefully my PC should all be good since my build a month ago :D

Thanks.

It could be the ware levelling part of the firmware has ran out of empty blocks and is starting to erase dirty blocks as you write to the drive. A quick format wouldn't fix it and a long format may make it worse. You'll need to find out how to Secure Erase the drive (or the Crucial equivalent) and reimage or reinstall windows. Secure Erase will tell the drive to wipe all blocks and start afresh.

I tried a hotfix i found but that did not work so before i just came on here to read the replies i tried the other sata 6GB port and it seems fine for now so dont know whats wrong there ?

Will see how it goes for now i guess but weird how one port is slowing it down and the other is fine.

Update : Just started to get the freezing again despite changing sata ports and cables.

Any ideas guys ?

Do you think i could RMA this back to OcUK and possibly get a refund even though its about 3 weeks old ?

Dont think i really want to keep the SSD the amount of problems iv read people having the same issue as this and obviously dont want to exchange it for another as ill probably end up having the same problem ...

proberly wont get a refund as it's after the 7 day marker ?

Create a back up of your os to a different drive, then do a secure erase, plenty of tuts on the net and that will resolve your issue, its on good practice to have a digital back up of your OS localy any way so two birds and all that.

you wont get a refund or credit note as you are out of the 7 day grace period for the DSA and theres no chance of a RMA as the drive is no doubt fine.

Edit*****

Also not that i know if it would make a differance but is the sata port set to AHCI aswell as that helps performance on a SSD

Yes mate its in AHCI

Ill do as you suggest and try a secure erase and see how it goes.

Thanks for the info :)

Noob question but when i try to backup through windows 7 it does not show my c:/ (SSD) just my other HDD's. Is there a way to get my SSD to show up or do i have to use a 3rd party program to do a backup of the SSD ?

Thanks
