Quick question about installing an SSD in a laptop.

I know that SSDs come in (at least) two different heights: 7 mm and 9.5 mm.

Do only the thinner drives generally fit in laptops, or does it vary from manufacturer to manufacturer or from model to model?

Thanks,
Simon

P.S. The reason for the question is that I'm debating between the Samsung 830 (7 mm) and the Crucial M4 (9.5 mm).

If you buy the "notebook" version of the Samsung 830 then you get a 7mm drive and 2.5mm spacer should you need it.

I may be completely wrong here so don't take this as 100% but don't regular 2.5" mechanical drives come in ~9" and 12" thickness? And therefore even the 9" one will fit.
