Just purchased a Samsung 840 SSD 500GB.

I am trying to use it via an esata connector on my motherboard.
I have two esata sockets. One is currently connected to a 4 bay NAS.

I am using an Akasa esata cable which has both a power and sata connector to connect directly to the SSD.

My computer is not seeing it at all. Do I need to format it first?

The box that contained the SSD states 'activated'.
Does that mean it has already been formatted and should just plug and play?

try plugging it into your mb ssd port first and see if it shows up in windows,if not click start/right click my computer/manage/storage/disk management and see if the ssd dhow there and right click it an mark as active or change driver letter/path and it should then show up in windows

then put it back in your box or caddy ect

Not showing up in disk management on my desktop.

I shall connect it to a bog standard sata connection just to make sure it is working and not dead.

I want to use it as a storage drive as I already have a system ssd.

It was a silly mistake on my part.

The esata cable also has a usb cable attached. It takes the power from that.
I thought it was a choice between using the esata connection or usb connection.
It needs both.

Silly me! :)

Now formatting it.
