Has anyone done this before? If so what is it a noticeable increase in performance and battery life?

Seriously tempted to upgrade my old Acer Aspire One D250. I don't store loads of things on there so a force 3 120GB SSD like I have in my rig would be perfect I think, Plus I can utilize the old 160GB SATA drive in there atm.

Ive upgraded the RAM to 2GB from 1GB, and it made a big difference :)

Hi there,

I haven't upgraded a proper netbook with an SSD, but I have upgraded both a six year old dell netbook and a 1.4GHz i3 Ultraportable with an SSD. In both cases the upgrade provided very significant performance increase - since in so many of the basic tasks the system is severely limited by the slow 5400rpm 2.5in HDD and popping in an SSD totally removed that bottleneck.

As for battery life, I think there was a small increase in that area - but nothing dramatic.

One thing I did notice was that both computers ran quieter - since the SSD is silent and the HDDs were relatively noisy in operation (probably made worse by being so close to it).

I fitted an SSD to my wifes HP DM1: Got about 10% more quoted battery time from it.
I got about the same increase in my HP G6.

I chucked a 30GB SSD in my Aspire One 521 along with a 4GB stick of ram

It flies along now, Chrome is the best browser for slow CPU's like these I find.

The 521 has some AMD chip, whilst yours is an Atom, but the same principle applies.

Very much worth the upgrade. Battery life seems better, but that could just be a placebo, I didn't do any proper testing.

Thanks Bled, always re - assuring to have a few that have taken the plunge posting on here.

ah the 521 is slightly older model if I'm correct? Ive worked on a 531 before with the Atom in. havent tinkered with a netbook with an AMD cpu in yet.

I'm actually quite excited about getting this SSD in it now :D Im with you on the memory thing, mines running windows 7 starter and with just 1GB of Ram you can just imagine how crappy it was running!

I went for the 521 since it's got HDMI and DXVA (can play 1080P videos using the onboard graphics card) and it was about £140 at the time :D

First thing I did was tested it worked, then I put W7 on there and the 4gb of ram. About a week later OcUK were selling 30gb SSDs for £30, so I snapped one up for it

Check your chipset in your Netbook, if it's SATA1, which is in a lot of the earlier Atom based machines, it's borderline if it's worth it, performance is increased, but not massively so.
