SSD in raid will it run slower?

yes but the ssd wound be doing all the work, and the disk would just be a mirror of it in case of fail?

There are ways of doing that (drive pooling) but not with regular RAID1 AFAIK.

Yeah but the system would be sending the data to both, but having to wait for the HDD to play catchup surely

You'd probably be better having the SSD as the "main" drive and then the HDD doing a mirrored copy every so many hours.

you'll only be as quick as your slowest drive in the system

RAID1 still means all drives need a copy of the data. Write speeds will be limited to the speed of the HDD.

It will also destroy random seek times as it's limited to the speed of the HDD.

ok thank for the info guys. i will find a way to do an autermated clone of the drive ever week or so.

I have no data that must be saved/safe its just because i have had an SSD fail in the past and its a pain doing a fresh install.
