IF I was to buy an SSD (something like a Samsung 840 PRO 250Gb)

what would my best option be to get the most speed out of it?

Could I buy a PCI controller for this motherboard ?
or would it be best to get a new mobo/CPU combo?

Any help much appreciated
Thanks

specs :

Coolermaster CM690
i7 940
6Gb
HD 7850
Prolimatech Megahalems + Noctua NF-P12
Gigabyte EX58-UD5
Asus Xonar Essence STX
OCZ 780W

From a personal point of view (IE. if it was me).

- Then I would consider a re-build around a more modern mobo/CPU.

+ I'd buy the EVO, rather than the Pro as it's very unlikely that you will/would notice any difference (and save yourself some money along the way).

Though others may have a different opinion.

PS. I don't think the add in cards perform as well as the native Intel controller/ports. So don't think you would get the best out of your SSD going this route.

buy the cheaper evo drive and stick to current board and sata2 ports, will still be very very fast

add in controller cards have rubbish marvell sata controllers, only newer boards come with intel sata3 controllers,if I were you id stick with current board/sata2 ports you wont miss sata3

if you upgrade board/cpu in the near future the ssd can be carried over

Your motherboard/CPU are probably fine for now even if they are a bit old. The SSD or maybe a better graphics card is what I'd do next.
