was wondering if the solid state drives are compatible with this board?

I was looking into getting one for christmas as a nice little upgrade!:D

i heard there will be less of a performance due AHCI not working on the P5series boards from asus.

There are reports of it not showing within windows but in a BIOS and a special DOS command is needed to get it partitioned.

So basically do you think I would be ok in getting one?

Yes it is worth it, I have the OCZ Vertex 2E Bigfoot 120GB 3.5 in my system with the same board. currently getting 260MB/sec reads and 215MB/sec writes with Atto, is a bit lower than most but hardly noticable in day to day tasks. Brought new life into my old system.

Had no problems with windows 7, plugged the drive in on the first Sata port did a clean install of windows, was up and running within a few mins.

Nothing wrong with ahci on asus P5 series board. The lesser performance is down to the nv sata controller I suspect. Partition will be properly aligned if you do a fresh Win7 install and format the drive during the installation.

I had no problem installing vertex 2e 60GB on the p5n-e.
Bios and windows both detected it fine.

Although there is no setting in the bios for AHCI from what I could tell - maybe it was well disguised though.

good sir, did you enable this feature? :D
(edit ahhh i read that you found an ahci feature, think i need to go to specsavers!)

The P5N-E SLI does not have AHCI in the bios, but as steve258 pointed out the slightly slower speed is due to the Nvidia chipset on the board as stated on the OCZ forums.
Just plug in and enjoy:)
