HI :)

Im a gamer and ive ordered my new build the other day.
I was planning on buying a 5850. But ive heard a lot about how good SSD are these days.

So i was wondering do i need all tht power from the 5850. i hav a 23" 1920x1080 monitor and ill like to play games at tht resolution.

Or do you think i can get away with a 5770 and a SSD instead? but i still need a decent fps.

Opinions please :)

For a gamer a 5850 would be best, I would think a 5770 would be OK for a semi-gamer.
A faster hardrive would make the computer as a whole feel better but it won't improve gaming other than install time and loading time.

My recommendation would be to get the 5850. At that resolution, games are starting to need that much power - if you want the eyecandy.

The SSD would be a good choice if you were, say, choosing between a high power or lower powered CPU, where the difference for gaming purposes, multitasking, and hard drive access is a lot less significant - you can feel the difference the SSd makes easily.

Thanks i think ill get a 5850 now and a SSD later :)

Quick question, if i install win7 onto my HDD now and then i buy a SSD later is it possible to transfer my OS from the HDD to the SSD

dont know if thats possible but a fresh install would be better anyway imo

I think we've missed a very important question here...

What is your full current setup??

It's very hard to say what is better if we have no idea of what you got.
As much as 5850 is a powerful card, it's not only the GPU that brings the gaming performance, you need well balanced build all together.

Here's what ive ordered

Phenom II x4 965 BE
Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P
OCZ Platinum 4GB DDR3 1333MHz
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB
Corsair 650w
Corsair H50-1
Lancool K58
Sony AD-5240S 24x DVD±RW

I dont have one as this is my first build and im using my laptop atm as my last computer died
So i ordered all my components b4 1st jan but the GPU cause i cant afford it yet until my student loan comes through on the 11th ;)

Get a single 5770 for now and see how that works for you and eventually if you feel like needing more you can add second one later. However I'm quite sure you'll be happy with a performance of a single one for a while yet.

Also as much as an SSD will be nice, new OCZ SSDs are supposed to come out shortly so the prices might go down a lot within 2months or so.
Economic option will be to get 2nd SpinPointF3 for raid0 setup.

So yeh, I'd say get a single 5770 and another HDD for raid setup and then see how that works for you and you can eventually buy another GPU for CF or get an SSD.

Did you order tube of MX-3 btw?
A must have for every build : ).

Hmmm i was considering gettin just one 5770 and then crossfiring it later (hence i got the 965 instead of the i5 :) )
No i didnt order any mx 3, i was going to when i was goin to order the arctic freezer pro 7 but got told i didnt need mx 3 when gettin the h50 :/
Looks like thts on the list with 2x 140mm fans and a 5770/5850.

P.S this question is probs retarded but whats raid 0?

H50 comes with thermal paste preinstalled and its supposed to be half decent, so no you dont need thermal paste per say..

Raid 0 IS a striped array meaning it spreads all data accross multiple Hd's

Eg you buy 2x 1TB drives all data is spread accross both drives not just one. Raid 0 essentially takes 2 drives and turns them into 1 very fast drive.

Downside is if one HD fails your raid config is screwed and all your data is lost since its spread accross both drives

"RAID 0 (striped disks) distributes data across multiple disks in a way that gives improved speed at any given instant."

You sort of get 2 drives and make 1 out of it, so 2x 500gb drives will make you 1 500gb drive with faster speed.

There are multiple RAID setups as you can see here :

Not as good as an SSD but you'll see a huge improvement and it works out cheap :).

And grab the MX-3 definitely, it's cheap and it will last you for future upgrades, you can also apply it to GPUs / mosfets etc to drop temps as well and not only CPU !

think you mean 2x 500gb give you 1tb in raid 0 :D

2x500GB gives you 500gb in raid 0 instead of 1gb normal as the data is stripped over both drives instead to 1 resulting in faster speeds as your PC can read a bit of data from 2 drives at the same time.
