SSD or quick HDD?

I have a 250GB WD HDD which is about 4 years old and basically has my OS on it only, which is win7 64 bit home premium edition.

In addition to this 2x WD Cavair Green 2TB HDD and a 500GB Maxtor HDD. I am using 1 2TB HDD to store TV & Films, the other for Games and the 500GB for Music.

I want to replace the 250GB HDD but I don't know whether I should go for a SSD or a quick HDD? A friend says that the value of a SSD is not worth it and I should get a WD Black HDD which is apparently pretty fast.

Also he says that I should have my games on the same drive as the OS because I get slight lag in my games. The trouble with this is that I have 367GB of games installed so far so getting a large enough SSD will cost a lot.

Does anyone know what the best solution would be? I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance.
Jon

Additional Spec:
Intel Core i5 CPU 760 @2.8 GHZ
4GB of DDR3 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5800 series.

Ssd's, though comparatively expensive, are the best bang for buck performance upgrade for your pc - your system will just be notably snappier. The only down side is that once you have experienced the delights of an ssd there is no going back.... :-)

Agree, the only problem I would say if your using a SSD very rapidly applying many writes this degrades the cells of the chip, however a HD doesn't have this problem.

Another good point is that SSD are great for shock. Check this video out, it made me go for a ssd:

without a shadow of a doubt a SSD.... you will wonder how you managed to work with a HDD

SSD of course :D

SSD, it makes opening/closing everything in windows faster, it makes everything better, full stop. Then what games you can fit on whatever drive you get will also benefit. Some games have very little in terms of improve load time as some games have little to load but lots of computation to do, other games do great with reduced loads. In reality sticking COD or something is going to load a very small amount faster, but you won't notice or care that much. If you play Eve/lotro/wow/something then you'll find the constant loading vastly reduced, less hitching and better loading/less stuttering in situations in MMO's where you have loads of players involved. I'd say MMO's benefit from SSD's more than anything else.

I stick windows, most programs and as many games as I can fit on ssd, games on another and I'm not starting to move as much to external hdd's for storage as possible.

Is it perfect, no, would everyone ditch all their hdd's for ssd's if the price were equal, in a heartbeat. For now, I got a 64gb ssd when I found a good deal, I got a 128gb when I found a great deal on one, I just picked up a 256gb ssd when the price became worthwhile, and I'll eventually move to a 512gb-1tb drive when that is cost effective.

Fact is gaming is one of the worst reasons to get an ssd, it certainly can help, some people suggest higher minimum framerate, less chance of stuttering, which are important, saving a few seconds loading is "meh". Overall windows responsiveness, ability to multitask and the like are the most important things you'll gain from an SSD. Expect a completely different gaming experience and you'll be disappointed by SSD's, expect a very nice responsive feel, the general feeling of speed, the snappyness and some small increases in performance everywhere and you'll be about spot on.

Everyone who went ssd(bar a few weird people) all say its a freaking awesome upgrade, and almost no one is ever disappointed for getting one.

He is correct, its awesome, great speeds. I have had my ssd for over a year and the speeds are so fast!

I see a trend here :)

Thanks for the replies, so SSD it is, can anyone make a recommendation on what one I should get? It will be an OS drive mainly so probably won't need to be massive.

Should it matter if my games are not on the same drive? I currently have them on a separate 2TB drive.

Cheers, Jon
