ssd over rated imo - wait it out

I made the plunge and got a new SDD this weekend after problems with my hard drive. Honestly I think the whole performance hoo-harr is over rated, even for the computing world. Gaming, boot time and day to day use hardly seem different. It still took me ages to complile my postgres db.

The only thing I've noticed is installs are quicker and my WEI score is now 7.1 instead of 5.9 or 5.8. Meh... £170ish is too much for what you get/don't get.

Those sitting on the fence I would say are right to do so imo. Wait it out until the prices come down some more or you need a new HD.

glad you posted this :)

im thinking about upgrading from my hard drive to an SSD.

i was planning to get a 40GB intel SSD for £100 but its mainly so i see an increase in gaming FPS.

SSD will do nothing for your FPS, though it might eliminate any stutter from texture loads and autosaves.

What SSD did you get btw Leeds? As long as it's not a complete dud, you'll definitely notice the difference when you go back to a mechanical drive pc after getting used to SSD speeds being the norm.

For me the speedup is as noticable as when I went from an athlon XP to Core2Duo.

Yep..same as me. The speed-up is very noticeable too. Well chuffed tbo.

Samsung PB22-J Zarf. Noticed a slight change when using old pc but not much. No change to gaming.

Very surprised. I noticed a big change on mine.

I wouldn't buy an SSD for an improvement to gaming.

Was reading earlier that the current manufacturing costs are about $1.75/gb with current densities, but Intel/Micron's new tech is reducing that to $0.5/gb. So, in theory at least, we could see the cost substantially lowered this year. Well, that's optimism for you.

I expect we'll have to wait for 2011 to get at or below £2 per gig.

in our society nowadays is it important to have a faster read and windows boot time ?

are we all in such a rush that a few more seconds are better than a few less seconds.

i know pc's are getting faster and better but is a ssd that important over a normal hard drive ?

im very happy with my samsung f1 and to be honest im never in that much of a rush to gain a few more seconds in loading times.

It's not all about speed. Silence is nice too. Mechanical hds make a lot of noise, if you've silenced the rest of your rig.

Before moving to SSDs I used 2 150GB Velociraptors (in RAID0), however, (on moving to SSDs) I found the differance in performance quite noticeable...in boot time, programs opening and copying/moving large files...

I doubt you need to look into your crystall ball again... ;)

I have the Samsung PB22-J too, and it did make a big difference in gaming for me, but obviously none to my frame rates. Level load times, loading and saving a game, game launch times are all quicker.

ditto on my Samsung. Everything is just super fast. opening docs/games etc are instant. transfering files is way faster too.

Windows just feels a lot smoother without all the stutering whilst the HDD is waiting to load a certain reg file.

how you haven't noticed the difference over a HDD is beyond me.

money well spent here

I made the move for lower noise levels and less internal heat sources.
Taking the raptor out of my loop made a massive differance.
The WD black is now inauable in my GUP.

The quicker load times was just a bonus.
Paid a little over £2/Gb second hand for 64gb of SLC silence

im waiting too, the size isnt big enough for me, i still want to be able to fit all games/programs on the ssd so that means 128-256GB i will wait it out until these are viable until then im keeping my newly purchased 300GB VR

I'd love that as well but seeing as how my Steam folder currently weighs in at a healthy 620GB I've got to be realistic. Currently the only 512GB SSD on OcUK costs over £1000 and it still wouldn't suit my needs. Therefore to me it makes perfect sense to opt for a 80-120GB SSD for my OS and HDDs for everything else. Currently I have a 150GB Raptor but it's very noisy and performance is far from ideal. I'm very tempted by the OCZ Vertex Limited Edition but I'm not completely sold just yet.
