SSD Problem?

Hi.

I'm rather unsure if my SSD is dieing or if it has a problem.

This morning I turned on my PC like usual however, when I tried to boot into Windows I got a message saying "Bootmgr missing". I thought, okay, and rebooted. Same problem.

I then went into my Gigabyte BIOs and the SSD drive was not detected, only my 1TB data drive (which is now 5 years or so old).

Instantly I wacked open my case and checked the cables and oddly they where fine. I then unplugged the SSD from the motherboard and then plugged it into another SATA port and for some reason it worked! No idea why, but hey, it worked.

I haven't managed to try it again since this morning. Could this problem (which may be gone or may still be waiting to flare up) be a sign that my SSD is dieing or would it just be some bug?

My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z77X-D3H and my SSD is a Cruical M4 SATA 3 SSD.

Thank you :)

Yep. My first thought is your SSD is heading off into the Silicon sunset.
Back everything up while you still can - then head for the MM.

How long have you had the M4 and is this the first time it has happened? Where there any non normal conditions before your reboot?

This happens with my M4 occasionally, usually on a hard shutdown/crash/power failure, and it subsequently not being detected at reboot.
Solution is to power cycle by leaving it plugged in, booting into bios and leaving it for 10-20 mins then reseting. Its then detected. I think the new firmware is supposed to fix this but ive left mine on 010G.

Off the top of my head I think the SSD is on the 000F firmware but will have to double check. The SSD is a few months old, I got it back in August.

No other problems on the SSD at all. Only one small issue of taking about 40 seconds to shutdown every now and again with no obvious reason, but I sorta disregarded this. It first occurred a few weeks ago.

Luckily as I type this I am on my M4 SSD system, it appears to be OK at the moment, for now :P

Worth checking and up to you if you want to update. Since I realised mine was occuring due to abnormal shutdowns I decided to leave it be as it's not causing data loss. Have had the drive 4 months myself. In your case it sounds like you power cycled when you checked up in bios.

No idea what the cause is but it worked after I used a different SATA port on my motherboard.

I've also noticed that in WEI the score for the SSD was 7.9 but has recently dropped to 7.7. Is this a problem? The drive is still OK at the moment.

Just in case anything does happen smoogels, back up your data, just to be safe. Like other people have said, update your driver if possible.

Luckily my SSD has nothing that important on it :) Basically just Windows and a few bits of software. Most of my data is on my 1TB luckily.

it could have been a cold boot issue?

to restore ssd performance you need to do a secure erase, lost performance can be down to how full the ssd is
