SSD Querry

Ive been looking for a while now at getting an SSD to help speed up my system especially at boot time's.
Now there are a multitude of drives now availeable in varoius sizes speed's as well as technologys
Im looking at one around 64Gig as it seems to be within my price range of £140 there abouts.
The bit im wondering about is which is better SLC or MLC in terms of longevity
because at £140 thereabouts for a drive that is only 64Gig i want it to last a good 5 years plus.

[Speed]

To be honest it won't last 5 years, not because the SSD will fail but because the advancement of tech will render a buget SSD slow and small in that length of time. I'd say you'd get 2 years max out of it before looking to upgrade.

Either way, I'd personally stretch to a 120/128GB version at the very least, my 120GB OCZ gets full pretty quickly with games etc. Even though I store music, photos and other large files on a 1TB drive. This one here looks ok for your budget:

It is slower than the other drives, but nothing you'd really notice in real world use. Size is more important to most than the speed.

From what I understand of SLC and MLC, SLC lasts longer, but at the end of the day you get a warranty with the drive of 2-3 years so it really doesn't matter. Even with MLC, it will far outlast the warranty with normal to heavy use. SLC is also faster, but much more expensive and at your budget, just stick with MLC.

Take a read of this thread for a more general overview of the drives. Personally I think you should consider some other options...

Anyway, if MTBF and the manufacturers claims are going to be believable (it's too soon to know for certain), then endurance of 5-10 years on a MLC with average use shouldn't be a problem. But as Speed says, a drive bought today won't be cutting edge in 5 years time - though it might still be useful for some things if the small capacity isn't an issue - as they're small enough for 2010, let alone what we'll be wanting in 2015!!!
