Hi guys

I recently brought this off OCUK

Possible stupid question, I am currnelt using an MB that only has sata 2 ports. I was thinking of upgarding my mb in a few months and the mb I was looking at has Sata 3 ports.

I wanted to get increased perforamce from my SSD by using sata 3 port and cable, however this sata comes in a box that says in massive letters SSD sata 2, does this mean it will only work with sata 2 connections or doesn't matter?

Thanks in advance

It will work in a sata 3 port as they're backwards compatible but you won't get increased performance.

You need a SSD with speeds over 300Mb/s to take advantage of a sata 3 port.

Ok

So when I get my new MB, theirs no point in getting a sata 3 cable and hooking SSD up to SATA 3 port as I will see no increased benefits in speed?

The cable doesn't matter, you can use an old cable and as long as the drive and MB port are both Sata3 then it will work at sata3 speeds

Oh ok

To expand further the board and cpu I was gonna upgrade to are:

i5-2500K
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-368-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1275

and MB

Asrock P67 Extreme 6 Intel P67

So to conclude, If I upgrade my current set up in sig to this cpu and MB, buy a SATA 3 cable and hook this up to the 1 of the SATA 3GB ports I will get increased performance from my SSD currently only running my OS.

OCZ Agility

Sata 3 requires a Sata 3 drive. The OCZ Agility would appear to be sata 2, you wont get a direct benefit in that case.

It will be like changing your speedometer to show 200mph. Nice but the car wont likely go any faster

Read: Up to 230MB/sec
- Write: Up to 135MB/sec
- NAND Flash: Multi-Level Cell (MLC)
- Interface: SATA-II

You would get a benefit if your current sata setup is limited to 200mb I think

Do these sata drives have a burst speed above the official speed? I presume it would still need the drive to be sata 3 to actually benefit

Ok

Thats fine I won't worry about it then, the SSD i have is much faster then my old HDD anyway, jsut wanted to see if SATA 3 was all its cracked up to be really.

Your sata 2 drive will be plenty fast enough.

I have an old Corsair SSD in my HTPC with read/write speeds of 90/70mbs. It may take a bit longer to install windows and programs but once its up and running it flies.
