SSD really needed for gaming?

I find it depends on the game.

games that load huge maps or have busy areas like WoW can benefit on loading times due to speeds of SSDs

when I had 1 x SSD I had games that loaded heavy maps or could benefit from the speeds on my SSD and then kept all single player games on a HDD

It's not a necessity no, it helps with load times for most games and there are a few games it improves performance on but by and large after the game has loaded you can't tell the difference.

250GB here for OS, 480GB for games everything else on a NAS. Love having SSDs and wouldn't go back. Loading times are superb!

Some games really benefit from it. Dayz Dev team suggested instilling it to an SSD for better performance. Load times are incredible, BF4 you'll be in a server sooner rather than later.

I only put my non important games on a HDD

Once you go SSD you don't go back.
Not essential for gaming, but using a PC without one is painful.

This. It's just an all round smoother and faster experience in Windows and some games will load much faster.

I have 3 SSDs totaling 1TB for two operating systems and a games drive, with two high capacity HDDs for document storage. I find this works extremely well.

Needed? No. Nice to have? Absolutely. Boot times and load times are vastly improved because of one, but you usually spend more time playing than loading, so buy something that lets you play better rather than load faster. What's the rest of your spec?
