Hello!

I would like to seek expert advice on SSD selection.

The SSD I want:
  • How much SSD do I need? --› 1TBű
  • SATA3 or mSata or M.2 connector --› I prefer the M.2 connector
  • What motherboard will SSD use with? --› Asus Maximus VIII Hero
  • How many years warranty should the SSD have? --› I would like it to be minimum 3 or 5 years, but more is better
Which product is the most recommended?

Recently bought a sabrent rocket based on advice from this forum. Think it's basically the same as a corsair mp510, but can get it on a deal if you're lucky. Picked mine up for £109

Pretty much any one of the latest batch of SSD's will do you. In day-to-day average use, I doubt very much that you would notice much (any?) difference between pretty much any modern SSD.

I'd go Nvme / M.2 if it was me, why not buy the best if it's available and the price point suits you!? Most of the better ones get a 5 year warranty and should easily last much much longer than this.

The Samsung 970 EVO+1TB is nice (I have one of the earlier models) but pricey. Top pick for performance/warranty/price for me would still be the Corsair MP510 960GB (which I also have). But nothing wrong with the WD black, or many others.

Pick anyone of the top few and I doubt you will be unhappy.

PS. Your mobo looks to support m.2 PCIE 3.0 x4. So you'll benefit from the full speed of the latest drives.

PPS. As your mobo is a couple of years old now, I'd probably look at making sure the BIOS is the latest (for comparability sake with m.2). Or at least see what changes there are in any BIOS later than what ever you are currently running. Just a thought.

Final comment. Might be worth considering having your OS on a smaller Nvme m.2 drive and splitting your other data (photos/games etc.) over one or more other drives (they could even be mechanical HD's for things that don't benefit much from the extra speed). That's a common way to set a PC up these days. Though in my case, I've got everything split over several different SSD's. Makes recovery easy if one drive fails. So many options here....

sabrent rocket 1tb nvme ssd for £110. 5 year warranty
very near sammy 970 evo for less than half the price

comparison:

Depends if you are a techie and want the best, and to know you have the best.

I now use chinese brands, and no noticable difference in speed in real life usage vs expensive brands, and zero failures. Got to make sure its one of the better brands though, and not a new company using rejected chips

well Samsung is damn too expensive, that's for sure.

Which budget is best?

Depends on the use case. If lots of high IO writes in professional capacity such as software dev work, then Samsung Pro. If mainly just reads for regular use then a WD Green, or WD Blue.

I hate the snobbery with SSD's. For most desktop purposes any TLC based drive will easily have the endurance.

QLC drives will be fine for 99% of users.

The warranted endurance is not the real endurance, this is something it seems a lot of people don't realise.

My Crucial 2050GB MX300 has a warranted endurance of 400TB, though the 275GB MX300's real endurance is 2,659TB. Doing the math, my larger drive could have an endurance of 20PB.

Aren't you scared that your data might get corrupted. Are you sure you can trust their build quality?
