Hello folks. After a recommendation please. From browing the recent forum threads, there's obviously a strong contender, but I thought I'd lay out the specifics in case someone pipes up with an "actually, for you this'd be better".

current setup:

64Gb SSD for boot drive (win 7)
~2Tb storage HDD

All my programs/games are on the HDD.

I'd like to have enough SSD space to keep 2-3 main titles on SSD for faster load times (mainly BF3/4, stuff I'll play online where getting to the map on time is actually worth it).

I don't see any reason to migrate the boot drive, so I just want to add an additional SSD.

Everyone seems to be stoked about the Samsung 840 Pro (and 840 evo for the slightly cheap - i.e. me). I was just wondering if it's worth going for another brand for larger space/better speed for my spending, given that all that will be on the drive is games (i.e. non-critical data) and therefore I'm willing to go for a riskier option if it's cheaper or more suited to the planned usage.

Virtually any modern SSD will do the job, and will be fast.

I only fit Samsung EVOs at the moment. Got another three arriving today.

I suppose it's understandable that many people who haven't "played with" many SSDs are bound to be concerned about specifications and performance. What experience has shown me is that there is little percieved difference between the speed of different SSDs. It's probably more important to consider price, reliability and manufacturer reputation. I think Samsung score well on these three points.

(I don't have shares or any connection with Samsung, BTW. I used to install Crucial SSDs, but Samsung's pricing and performance made me switch brand. I also heard about a few issues with their M4 SSDs).

Samsung

And stay away from those overly cheap OCZ SSDs

I`ve got one of those in my latop.

Gets very little use, but I like a little danger in my life.

And any recent Samsung will do. It seems that TLC NAND is not as "cheap and unreliable" as some would have us believe.

(That's means non-pro's will start failing tomorrow) ;)

I have 3 x Samsung 830's and a Samsung 840 pro. All been faultless except I did a trim on a 830's using Samsungs software and it lost all data, I just don't do any manual trim on them again!

I also own a Crucial M4 thats been good and also 2 Kingston SSD's. Had issues with the Kingstons and would avoid those.

So yes any of the Samsung SSD's are recommenced by me, Cruical M4 still worth a shout if you found one at a good price.

Just installed a EVO 1TB 840 into a new Drobo Mini and my read write speeds are around the 150/200 mark. So I am not impressed. Hard to say if its the Samsung or the Drobo. I bet its the drobo.

Might consider returning it.

The Samsung Evos are fast when connected to a "normal" SATA III socket (or SATA II for that matter).

More or less as fast as any modern SSD you might choose.
