Has anyone else ever had the remaining life on their SSD hit 0? I only happened to look at the SMART values while looking at another drive so I'm not sure if it has been like it for a while or if it has only just reached 0. The drive still works I just wonder if anyone knows if the remaining life SMART value is an accurate indicator or just a predicated lifespan.

I would imagine that it's a predicted lifespan unless there's something in the firmware forcing it to shutdown on reaching zero. Since the data there is pulling from calculations that are "rated" for the flash memory only, and not actual checks on their condition. So in theory, it could go on for a lot longer after despite hitting 0%.

Someone more knowledgable should correct me if I'm wrong about how SSD's function. :)

Incidentally, what are you using on that drive that it's down to zero already? I've got a SSD (bought 4 years ago) at a few hundred hours of on time more than yours and hasn't gone beyond 98% yet.

Nothing particularly exciting it is just a 4 year old OS drive. I have a Vertex 2 in one of my machines that is still working and that's 6 years old, haven't had a chance to log into that one to see what the life left is on that. Not even sure if that generation will have much smart data considering the minimal amount on the Vertex 4.

I think the writes matter more to SSDs than the power on time, this one is at 17TB but I didn't think that was much considering some tests you can find show drives being written to with hundreds of terabytes of data before failing.

I've heard Intel drives go into a read only mode when hitting zero before bricking themselves on reboot. Luckily mine didn't do that!
