if not, can i improve?

Ah, you need AHCI drivers too but it's not easy to switch over.

You need the F6 drivers for your SATA controller, then if you are able to do a fresh install, set the BIOS to AHCI and install Windows and use the F6 drivers when it gets to the partitioning screen.

I'm not sure if there is an easier to switch from IDE to AHCI.

Yea, You set the hard disk controller in the bios to either IDE or AHCI

Generally you need to do this before you install windows, if you change it after windows wont boot up (as you have seen). So you can either :

a) do a fresh install of windows (what version are you using?) and change it in the bios first .. or

b) There is a method that changes settings in the registry to make it work
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/244840-14-convert-sata-ahci-vista here's one thread that talks about it, there are plenty others if you google them.

I suppose it depends which windows you are using, but i would do some reading up yourself before choosing what to do. Since you say you are naive about these things, maybe changing the registry isnt a good idea

What motherboard do you have? If it has a secondary SATA controller like a SATA 3 one as well as the Intel ICH10R on the SB, you can set that on to AHCI, install the drivers for it in windows, plug it into the secondary controller and it will work.
