I have purchased the crucial m4.

Reading around the net has left me a little confused as to how ssd drive should be set-up when installing a new opsys, in my case win 7 64bit.

Do I have enable AHCI in bios before installation, or when I'm in windows through registry tweak, then reboot enter bios, then set up AHCI reboot again and now It work,s.

Also, am I right that when windows installs it will take care of formatting using quick format for me, or do I have to tell it to do this, and do I have to make a partition? again is this taken care of?

Please help!

Before installing os etc, update the firmware of the ssd.

Go to Crucial website download firmware, burn to cd as iso image.

Put drive in to IDE mode.

Boot from iso, follow very easy instructions etc...

Back in to bios change mode to AHCI

Install sata drivers during os install.

Done!!

Only thing you musnt do is defrag an ssd. It degardes its life span.

Job done.

Doesn't really matter when you enable AHCI tbh .. I forgot to change mine after I reset my CMOS... I couldn't understand why the Intel storage drivers failed each time i booted... it was weeks before the penny dropped.. Drive still worked but without the NCQ features.

To set the AHCI after installing windows, check this out:

Lots of great info, thanks. can,t wait to see the boot times and loading of games and apps etc etc...

I may not need to update the firmware if it,s the latest, is this info in the bios?
