I tried with a socket 939 processor, but with no joy it was to do with the chipset Nvidia kept asking of a driver when trying to install windows, I gave up in the end
Oh it was a first generation Vertex I was going to use.
I'm fairly sure someone mentioned adding an SSD to a socket 754 rig and saying it was a rather welcome speed boost.
Though personally I have a 1900+/1GB/WD800JS setup downstairs, and it's borderline unusable I'd just save for some second hand stuff off MM, C2D E1x00/E2xx0, low end 775 board, and a gig or two DDR2 should set you back 40~70 at most.
I used to use an ssd on a Socket A setup. Would tide you over untill you can afford an upgrade, the ssd will help a lot but is no substitute for a proper upgrade, even cheap second hand stuff would be a big improvement.
