Hi guys,

I bought myself a new laptop (Asus U36JC, lovely machine) and put my Crucial M4 256GB SSD in it, along with 8GB of RAM.

Now the thing is very, very fast, but I just wanted to confirm that these benchmarks show it working to its full potential?

Bear in mind that the laptop only has a 3GB SATA controller, not 6.

Does all look well?

Also, this SSD has been in use for a while in my Macbook before I took it out. Is it still the case that SSD performance degrades with use, and/or does a fresh format 'reset' this?

Cheers :)

Hi guys,

As I understand it... All SSD's are subject to performance degradation to a certain degree. But in normal day to day use, in my experience it's not really a big issue. Though obviously depends on your usage pattern (IE. loads of speed tests every other day wont help things etc.). GOOGLE something like "SSD wear levelling" if you want, or are interested in more info.

To restore drive to factory fresh, you would need to do a "secure erase". Rather hope you are not talking about a full format on an SSD here!?

This is my new 128GB M4, Win7 64bit.

Edit: sorry wasn't reading the numbers correctly.

Your transfer rate looks fine in the first image, around 250MB/s. Don't think you get much more with 3Gbs sata.

so your not ment to "format" SSD's ? even when installing a OS ?

Correct.

If it's a new SSD, just let Windows do the work for you when you Install the OS.

If it's a used SSD, then "Secure erase" it first, then as above.

PS. Write Amplification is the enemy of SSD's!
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Write_amplification

PPS. Hence why the never ending speed tests that some people seem to run (not pointing a finger at anyone in particular here) don't do their SSD's a power of good. And their worry about "speed degradation" becomes a self fulfilling prophecy (so to speak).

having gone through a lot of fuss with my agility 3 I can say that your speeds are very good for sata 2

I dont get those sorts of writes speeds one the "fastest ssd ever ever ever" so id be chuffed to bits.

the nice thing is that when you upgrade to sata 3 you will probably double your speed, but yea there perfectly normal speeds.
