SSD to replace Raptor

Hey guys,

I've had my western digital 74GB 10K raptor for a good 3-4 years and feel like it's coming to the end of its life (plus it's very loud!) so was thinking about getting a SSD. It turns out it's only running at 1.5Gb/s transfer rate as well which is a bit weird but never mind.

I've currently got an Abit IP35 pro xe which can only do Sata 2.0 and i've no reason to upgrade my pc for another year yet so am not really too bothered about splashing mega dosh on a Sata 3 SSD unless others tell me it's worth the £25 adapter card?

So my question is which should I get?

Crucial C300 64GB
OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB
Corsair Force 60GB

Are any of these better than the others? It will mostly be used for playing Starcraft 2 and photoshop work for the heavy duty stuff if that makes any difference.

I think the Crucial would be a good buy but the write speeds don't look great compared to the others, will this make a big difference or not?

Cheers.

Crucial C300 64GB is what I am considering for replacing my raptor. Not the best writes, but the way I look at it, writing is what (slowly) wears out SSDs so I am gonna use it in situations were it's brilliant read speeds (355mb/s) come into play anyway, such as OS boots and loading files/games etc.

As photoshop involves a lot of writing, it will increase the wear on the SSD over a very long period of time. I use a lot of CS4 and am probably just going to use a conventional hard drive for the scratch disk. 6Gb of RAM partially compensates my need for a scratch disk.

I don't do the heavy heavy photoshop work so I doubt I'll tax the disc that much and I can just chuck the scratch on a conventional drive like you said.

Yeah i think it would only concern people who like to use 20+ layers on 3000x3000 pixel images. I know someone who does this and will easily use 40g of Scratch in a session.

For normal use I would not even worry.

I have a feeling that the older gen drives like the C300 might drop a little more when the newer gens go on sale, thats what I am holding out for atm.

So for one last question, will I see any real world write speed difference compared to the Vertex or the Force SSD?

i went with vertex2 on same mobo.

please double check this, but i think the vertex made best use of 3gbps being around 250mbs read and write
ie some had faster read speeds(300mbs+) but were above what 3gbps can do(250ish), and then their write speeds were a bit lower (150ish).

Random 4k read would still be faster even on SATA II, I believe.

I wouldn't worry about writes. The drive should good for at least 5 years. In that timeframe... :)

And I wouldn't fret too much about synthetic performance. Either the C300 or Vertex 2E will give you a great boost.
