quick question.. on a usb external caddy which is the fastest hdd...or ssd?

SSD will always be faster, but the interface may limit you significantly. How are you connecting the drive? USB2/3 or Thunderbolt?

Depends on what you want it for too. If speed matters then SSD. If you prefer a larger disk and not so worried about speed then HDD would be a better fit.
