SSD via USB?

ssd card? you mean ssd drive right? anyway yes you can get sata to usb cables, the samsung ssd 830 range even ship with them. It is worth noting that you cannot do everything over usb that you can do over sata. Why do you want to do this?

yes I do mean ssd drive. I just thought it would be nice to carry around a huge 120gb HD, rather then a 3.5" HD.

120gb isnt huge and if you are just looking for a drive for external storage then there are plenty of 2.5 inch usb powered offerings available. usb (unless we are talking usb 3.0) will bottleneck any ssd anyway so you would be better off with a mechanical drive for external storage. You will get more for your money too.

If you already have a drive that you want to use then just buy a usb enclosure for it.

SSDs are great for external storage in that they can take a good whack wheras your avg 2.5" might suffer badly. I'm not clued up on how the long term effects of possibly no TRIM etc.. might go (not sure if any USB solution passes on TRIM commands) but thinking if its got good GC it should be minimal.

Personally, if I wanted a portable drive, I would get a 1.8" or 2.5" HDD (due to cost).
You are right though, SSDs are falling in price, so in a few months, it may be better to simply hook a usb cable to a SSD.

As of now, for a 500GB HDD, external, you are looking at around £60.
A 128GB SSD will set you back around £75 + a suitable enclosure and cable.

So right now, the mechanical HD offers significantly better value.

Only in capacity/price per Gb really, like i said.. drop a hdd, even when off and good chance its stuffed, SSD? not likely especially in a nice rugged enclosure. Have seen as much as 130-150mb/sec constant with a Vertex 2E in an Asmedia chipped USB 3.0 enclosure, 5400rpm hdd in the same enclosure barely topped out at 49-58mb/sec and 7200 topped out at around 70mb/sec so nothing spectacular.

Certainly.
But you are paying 5-10 times as much for the SSD external drive.
That is a very high price premium.
I see your point regarding the physical robustness of an SSD (vs HDD).
It's all about value for money and cost.

The cost of a USB 3 enclosure can be less than 13.00 with a decent Asmedia bridge chip, thats neither here or there as a hdd would need one as well for max performance. I'm thinking of one of those cheapo plextor 256gb drives for 100 quid which is very good value, its half the size of a 500gb portable but i think the speed and robustness outweigh the capacity advantage for most things.

Edit: Plextor seems to have gone up to 119 though lol! Rather an 830 now for 140.00 instead i guess :)
