SSD vs HDD

Hi,

I hope to be upgrading my computer in the new year and i was wondering if i should do the following:

Have a SSD 64gb for my operating system and then a 1tb HDD for everything else.

I would like to know if i would see a big performance difference. Mainly i use my computer for games and movies.

I am on a budget and need to know if £180 for a SSD is really worth it?

There is a significant difference, but I would say, with prices so high, that its not quite justifiable yet.

i was having the same problem as you. I have an aging 74gb raptor that i thought could do with a rest. I then settled on just buying the 500GB WD caviar black for less than 50 pounds and letting SSD's become more user friendly. The prices imo are stupid and i will just get an SSD when the prices per GB are justifiable and they require no manual maintainence.

I've just built a system using an SSD for the operating system and then WD Caviar Blacks in RAID 0 for general storage. The SSD does give a nice boost in performance but the extra effort of optimising Windows and my application installs to get the balance right has made it a bit harder work than I wanted, and that's before I consider the cost!

So my thoughts are that we're about on the balance at the moment given the cost. Yes SSDs are nice but then a few WD Caviar Blacks in RAID aren't that shabby either

Have a quick google and find the Kingston 40GB SSD for ~£80.

Ok, it is small, but is large enough for a boot drive, and will tide your system over until some faster/better valued SSD's come out.

I think the R/W speeds are in the region of 240/80 ish, but dont quote me on thate.
