Hi there,

Just needed some more opinions on something . I have some old computer parts including an althon x2 6000+ 3.1ghz cpu that I am going to give to a mate to build a system for general use ( word, youtube etc.) My question is would it be a good idea to purchase a cheap ssd hard drive for the OS to use with a system like this or is the cpu too old to see the benefit from it.

The specs would be

6000+ althlonx2
2gb ddr2 800mhz ram
Amd 5850 graphics
30gb ssd?
250gb hdd

I think the cpu is about equal in performance to a q6600 from Intel but is only duel core.

yes get a ssd, I did this to a s939 x2 4200+ (only sata 2) and it made more difference to 'day to day' office tasks than upgrading to a higher spec cpu (i7 4790k) on a new rig. Obviously the i7 is faster but in day to day stuff like opening programs, using word etc there was very little gain made with the limited cpu usage of the programs, an ssd made a visible difference.

I'd also agree with getting another 2GB+ of ram if you can.

That's just what I wanted to hear. Very pleased to know that it worked out so well.

And thanks for all suggestions guys. SSD and 4gb ram it is :)

i have a X58 board and using sata 2 port as the sata 3 controller on it is terrible.

noticed quite a bit of difference still and glad i got one even if it is using sata 2 will just get faster speeds when i do finally get a new system.

for sata 2 i get 280mb read and 270mb write

Let me guess, you have a Marvell sata 3 controller on your X58? Bloody awful they are and worse than Intels sata 2 controller. I had one on my old Asus P7P55D-E Pro and did the same as you and went back to the sata 2 controller. Evene using a ssd on sata 2 is blazingly quick compared to a standard hdd though.

I have an SSD drive in my (s939) Opteron 180 machine with 4gb ram. The SSD really does give the machine a new lease of life keeping it somewhat useful as a htpc / browsing machine. It has a R7 250 gfx card but not that useful for games as it struggles with Tf2 these days ;)

I use a Marvel sata 3 pcie card and while its not great, it performs marginally better than the amd sata 2. The marvel appears limited to 450mb read / 250mb write as the same drive does 500/500 on an intel sata3 controller.

thats correct, the controller is crap, mine is a asus P6X58D-E mobo. apart from the controller the rest of the board is great.

The Motherboard I will be using has a sata 3gbs which I think is the old name for sata2?

Am I right in thinking that anything over a sata2 ssd would be wasted? Its not a problem but perhaps makes the cheapest options the best ones to go for.

Personally I'd grab a sata3 ssd, they're backwards compatible anyways so you can transfer it if you ever upgrade the rig etc. Besides the cost difference is pretty minor last time I checked.

Just get a sata3 ssd. Like lsg1r says, it's backwards compatible plus when you do a upgrade of the cpu and motherboard in the future you will get another speed boost from it. Don't cheap out on one though. Avoid the Kingston SSDNow ones like the plague as they changed the chips after the range was reviewed and they are nowhere as fast as they or the reviews claim.

30gb ssd? Get 120GB or at least 60GB.

I recently got a Samsung Evo 850 for my Q6600 computer. While it only runs at half speed due to Sata 2, I really have noticed the performance increase in all parts of the computer.

It should be ok as its only for the operating system.

Trust me, it won't be enough. 60gb minimum, preferably 120gb. Even 120gb is a bit restrictive when you've had the same OS on there for a couple of years and all the crap starts piling up
