Hi guys. So as the sandy bridge processor is comming out next week and stuff. I am thinking of getting a new rig. Of course been thinking of ssd for some time.

Just wondering what you think to them? Are they much better for games etc and just general use.

Thanks all.

I would also say "yes" but with the caveat... not to expect it to be a life changing experience though. That's just my own personal opinion and not looking for a flame war.

I went from having an OS partition on a 2TB RAID0 array of Samsung F1 1TB drives to a Mushkin Callisto Deluxe and it certainly is nipper, but sustained reads aren't that much faster, windows doesn't seem to boot much quicker either tbh. Programs open instantly, but they kind of did before with the RAID0 anyway, so yeah. It's a good upgrade to do and is certainly the future, but don't expect night and day if you have a decent hard drive now.

Best upgrade i ever made. Went from Raptor to Vertex and it was a night and day difference. If the rest of your build is strong you will find out just how much a HDD holds you back.

Try running a virus scan whilst watching a video, copying files in the background and a browser window with 12 tabs open on a HDD. Painfull at half the workload! On an SSD it's no problem at all.

If you have the money yes, it's the best upgrade I've done in years and makes everything more nippy. I went from a Samsung 320gb F1, anything that requires a disk scan is so much quicker and the noise is so much quieter. :)

I'll get one when I can fit my entire data on it. When it's a viable replacement for a hard drive.

They don't even make a disk big enough for mine so I use a NAS. Plus storing your data on your system disk which is statistically more likely to fail due to it's continuous use is not the best idea.

I just got 2 x Corsair Force 40GB drives in raid 0.
I get 550 mb/s read and write.

It gives me 74.4GB, after installing the OS and every game I play I have 20GB free. You don't need a huge amount of space if you also have high capacity mechanical drives.

If you are a heavy user/multitasker, it's totally worth it. I hate using computers without them now, once you get used to your PC working without an IO bottleneck It's incredibly annoying to use a spinnie again with all the little delays and choking up whenever you try and multitask.

It does vary person to person and system to system though, My mums Macbook was absolutely transformed by the upgrade to a Vertex2, Probably because it was a little RAM starved (1.5GB). She does a lot with iPhoto and things like browsing the iphoto albums in an open file dialogue box with all the thumbnails used to be painfully slow. I also upgraded my dads Vista laptop with a 160GB Intel - It now boots in 30seconds instead of over 5 minutes but apart from that he hasn't noticed much difference, which I put down to him being a fairly light user, and Vista having pretty decent pre fetching (he has 4GB ram).

I get by very well with 160GB space (150GiB after formatting) My bulk media and docs are all kept on my NAS anyway.

Using a machine without an SSD is such a chore once your main rig has one. I don't regret buying mine at all (except that I had the chance to pay no VAT and forgot about it :().

Reading your comments guys has made my decsion lol.

Thanks a lot for the comments. I am sure i will be posting here again on advice for the build.

Thanks all.

I'm also about to buy a new Sandybridge rig and was planning on pairing a 60gb SSD with a 1tb mechanical drive.

However I heard that Intel are likely to be bringing out their next gen SSDs in February, which could well double sizes/half-prices. So is it worth me building my rig with the mechganical drive for now, and adding the SSD in a month or two??? After all my machine could run perfectly well on the mechanical.

Also, if I do this, would it be easy to move windows 7 from the mechanical to the SSD?

[didn't mean to thread hijack, but I thought this was relevant]

Ive owned two SSD's and sold both of them a few days after buying them. First one cost £135 the other £220. Just becareful, while they start up windows slightly faster and open games slightly faster ...thats about it. So if you want a program to open in 2-3 seconds rather than wait 8 seconds for a program to open. go for it. Wont imrpove 99% of games out theres performance :( At the moment they are a HUGE waste of money. Id much rather but a good 1TB hard drive for a quater of the amount you would pay for 6gb SSD,

SIDE NOTE: I told my two of my I.T college friends that I had an SSD i(when it was just a cheapy HDD) and they couldnt wait to try it. I let them play about with my computer for 30mins. After the first start up both of them had their jaws on the floor saying how much faster programs opended and windows started. They didnt beleave me when i said it was just a 500GB HDD. My point is (no offence to most on here) its all in the mind to most users :( SSD are faster.. but for most users they wouldnt notice much diff compared to a well setup hard drive.

I know im going to get slated lol as most ppl hate ppl syaing anything agaisnt SSD :'( but im not a fan and wont be untill a 500GB one comes out for less than £200.
