SSDLife, a program just to scare you?

In the latest OCZ firmware update one of the improvements was...

Modified SSD Life Left calculations that were sometimes reading low on new drives

OCZ themselves have now released their own utility to check your drives SMART functions etc.

just did mine today, it doesn't update the lifetime though :/

I'm hoping that the value is wrong, getting less than a years life out of a drive would be rubbish. It's not even doing anything strenuous in my laptop, just web browsing, office and some media viewing. I've not been running lots of benchmarks either.

Still, the drive has a three year warranty, so if it does run out of write cycles I'll send it back for replacement (and hopefully get upgraded to a sandforce model for free).

who buys a 32gb ssd? i'd rather boot from a microSD card if things were that bad lol

Someone who wants the speed when needed, but is running a barebones setup, so doesn't NEED the space of a larger drive, as they don't have a huge amount installed? My HTPC could have got away with a 20GB HDD, as all the media is external.

Similar reason small HDDs still exist.

It'll be wrong. SMART calcs are based off other users smart stats, ive had a drive telling me that it should have failed already, for 3 years before i replaced it. Purely cause it was getting a false value for something. Ive also had a drive that was saying it had a good 5+ years left in it, everything in perfect order, suddenly decide to corrupt and die. So i chose to ignore those tests and go with "if its working fine and speeds are ok, it will work at least as long as warrenty". Obv still back up anything important, then it doesnt even matter when they do break in warranty.

One thing i did notice by looking at someone else data on irc is that OCZ returns a lot more s.m.a.r.t data, almost twice more that of Intel.
Wonder if that's a big factor.

Two of the photos above don't have an estimated life time left though. You didn't let it finish calculating how much life it had left. :)

I think the estimated life left is only on the Pro version? I got the free version yesterday and it doesn't give me that info.
