Hi there.

I'm considering upgrading to an SSD by the time my Windows 7 preorder arrives, and start fresh with a new OS on a new SSD.

After reading this forum for a while, it seems a Crucial would suit my needs the best.

Indeed from this forum I think I have most questions answered, except for one.

I use Acronis True Image 10, more specifically, I use the recovery media to do everything. I installed it once, made the Acronis 10 Boot CD, and then just used the bootCD thereafter.

I boot it once a week on my main system, to ensure I always have a recent backup, and periodically do my other systems too.

I was just wondering if I can expect this to work with an SSD as well?
Does anybody else out there, who uses an SSD, also have Acronis True Image 10, and use recovery media to boot from to backup/restore?

This is my only concern, that I could get Windows 7 on an SSD running great, but then not be able to do my weekly backup.

So, can anybody advise on this?

Actually, while I'm asking questions, at the moment I'm running my system in AHCI mode... would I continue using this for the SSD, or would it be better to run one in IDE mode?

Thanks for reading,
Vin.

Acronis works fine with SSDs but you do need to do a full disk backup (all partitions on SSD + MBR) otherwise you lose the optimal partition alignment needed for SSDs on restore. This is planned to be fixed though in the next release of Acronis later this year.
As far as the rest the SSD is just like a hard disk, AHCI is usually a little faster but IDE mode is fine (and often is more compatible). Booting from recovery media is no different.

Thanks for that.
That's put my mind at rest then.

I'll only be creating a single partition, and always do a full backup anyway, so that shouldn't make any difference to me.

I'll look up optimal partition alignment some time, but so long as my Acronis Trueimage 10 recovery media will work with it, then I won't need to upgrade.

I only wanted to check, because at the moment, when I boot my Acronis CD, if I use the full mode, then it only sees half my HDDs, and if I use the safe mode, it sees the other half... it's never been a problem, but it does seem to have problems detecting some of my HDDs sometimes. Also, my Epson printer has a memory card reader in it, and if I leave my SD card inserted when I boot Acronis, it freezes whilst detecting HDDs. Works perfect if I turn the printer off first though.

So although I can backup and restore perfectly (and it's fine on my other systems) it can be a bit picky about HDDs it detects, which is why I wanted to check first.

Still, ideal, looks like I may get myself a Crucial 128gb SSD from OcUK in time for my W7 install :)

I was going to upgrade my system, but to be honest, I don't think I really need to, so getting an SSD may give me more of a gain, than upgrading my CPU and GFX at the moment.

Cheers,
Vin.
