I've been doing some research into installing a new SSD onto a 17" MacBook Pro 2011. It's the i7 Sandy version with 8GB RAM.

A lot of people are reporting problems with particularly the OCZ Vertex and Corsair Force Series 3. Has anyone got any experience with putting an aftermarket SSD in the new MacBooks?

I'm not clued up on Apple hardware and as such don't want to be fiddling around with trying to get it to recognise the drive, would rather save myself the hassle and get something that works out of the box!

I read this article and this supposedly solves the SATA issues for the new MBP's but I'm not sure.

Thanks

17" 2011 i7 here...and my unit has had a number of SSDs in it:

C300 SATA III in primary bay - rubbish. Stuttered, wouldn't boot sometimes etc. Put in Optibay (SATA-II speeds on my unit) works absolutely fine.
M225 = fine
OCZ Vertex 2E now, in the OptiBay - just fine.

I can test it again with my M4 if you don't mind waiting. I couldn't use it in my 17" MBP because it just didn't work at SATA3 speeds. I'll see what this new update does.

I think the general consensus is that every brand of SSD have had issues - it is fairly new tech after all.

I do think they are a bit overrated in all honesty. Yeah the fast reboots are amazing and they do come into their own when using virtual machines... but for the average user I dunno. (great for gamers loading times)

Of course your curiosity will get the better of you (like it did me) and you will have to see for yourself. Either way investing in an optibay or ebay equivalent £20 jobby is well worth it.

Well, so far so good with this EFI update.
I had a horrible time with my Crucial M4 and my 17" MBP but no jerkiness so far!

+1

My M4 drive is great so far. With the latest firmware and EFI, I've witnessed no slow downs, stuttering or hdd related beach balling.

Solid drive, highly recommended. Paid £133 from ocuk, free delivery. Was the best price I could find :)

I bought a 13' MBP and installed an M4 bought from OC. No problems at all, was umming and arring about it from reading a lot of other peoples problems regarding it.

No problems here, updating the firmware was easy too.

What size SSDs is everyone going for? Keep looking at the smaller (64-80Gb) drives, but have been a bit concerned that they may start running out of space by the time OSX and all my apps (including Aperture, Lightroom & PSE) are installed.

Interested in any other recommendations for the MBP 13" base, as the M4 is pre order at the moment.
Already upgraded the ram to 8GB and would like to get the SSD ordered as soon as pos.

fyi I've heard the offical apple ssd drive is pretty similer to a kingston drive with toshiba controller, the 96gig model is what I've got in my pc :-)

oh you can get usb caddy cheaply for laptop drivss off ebay, I got one for 6 or 7 quid :-) uses 2 usbs for power
