Looking at an older laptop Sony VIAO it has Win XP media station on it about 2007 SP3 i think.

The current 80gb HD is connected via a SATA connector im guessing its not sata2 at least.

Seeing as SSDs are now so cheap ill pick up a ghettoish one for a replacement.

Are there any issues with them being that backward compatible or is this going to be an issue of checking compatibility sheets all over the place.

Installed an Intel 330 in my NC10 which is only SATA 1 and doesn't have AHCI either. Still a nice speed boost and better battery life too.

I belive trim on xp only via a toolkit from the maker and makers vary. Some older ssd's withtoshiba and other controlers make do with agressive garbage collection routintes instead of trim commands from the OS or toolkit

Ive just installed a M4 64gb into a Acer Aspire 5751Z and its fine. Running winxp(boots up in about 5secs now rather then 15), no trim but dont think its going to be a biggy as lappy wont be doing much writing to the ssd

Ah did not realise he was going to run XP. W7 is the way foward with SSDs though i've done a few systems in the past with XP and ssd tools, gets along ok.
