Hi All,

I'm buying selective components to keep my current 775 system going, but ones that I can transfer over when I eventually upgrade to Sandybridge.

As such, I quite fancy a SSD for Windows and a couple of games.

Will I see much benefit using a SSD with a SKT 775 system and Vista? I'm using a P5Q Deluxe, any dedicated drivers/software required for SSD use?

Finally, it is possible to transfer my existing Windows install on HDD to the new SDD wihout doing another full reinstall?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, massively so. I've got a 775 mobo and with a newly installed 60gb SSD and Win 7 on it the speed is sooooo much faster.

I did a new install of Win 7 as my old HDD (which is still running alongside the new SSD) still has XP on it.

If you're using Intel ports on motherboard its worth installing latest RST driver (I disabled the system tray icon).

Using an Intel SSD the Toolbox utility allowed the following to be easily disabled:
  • Superfetch/Prefetch
  • ReadyBoost
  • DIPM
  • Defragmenter

So make sure you disable defrag manually. Not sure about the rest, although I disabled them all to get green text.

Just got to remember Vista doesn't have TRIM support. So if you notice performance decreasing and SSD model doesn't include tool to perform a manual TRIM function then you'll have to log out of Windows every now and then to allow SSD to idle so firmware can perform maintenance.

Not sure bootup times decreased much with SSD, as can't remember mechanical drive performance. But you're looking at newer generation models.

If image across old installation, just check partition alignment is maintained. With Vista it's 1024K, as shown by these AS SSD benchmark pictures.
