SSDs.... why so EXPENSIVE!?

Hi,

I've seen a lot of people recommend SSD's... i mean i can get like a 1.5TB normal drive for the same price as a 30GB SSD!

I mean are they really good?
Any1 that has them please state that is there a huge difference in load times :D

Any other benefits of this extremely ridiculous price hard drive lol, please state.

Thanks for any answers!!

They're expensive because they're bleeding-edge technology at the beginning of its life in the marketplace. Not to mention the recession.

I have a 64GB Samsung SSD - it's very fast and totally silent. They're certainly not a must buy yet, but it won't be too long before we'll see price parity with conventional HDDs.

Uniform access times of next to nothing, silent, no mechanical parts, great read / write performance (especially in certain RAID setups) - as reflux says, early adopters pay a premium for performance.

I'm going after a 128GB Samsung soon. Supposedly a lot faster, silent and more robust.

Probably not worth the cost, but meh.
There's another thread on here with a link comparing the new samsung to the vertex and the vertex has a slightly higher read time. Really they are both decent, and probably equal in real world performance.

I heard about a guy who had raided 20 SSDs or something for a Uni project. Instant on Vista or something.

I've almost purchased 1, sometimes 2 on several occasions...but had to stop myself because I just feel it's not quite the right time. They are extremely expensive and a new, better version seems to come out every few weeks.

By the end of the summer I might consider it :) I would like 3 or 4 32GB drives in RAID 0 for less than 70ish

Man was so tempted after that youtube video and then read your post, sadly your right god dam you :p

I had a OCZ 120GB one, sold it after a day.

My RAID 0 samsung F1 1tb's were just as quick and my uncles RAID 0 10k RPM raptor srives were faster :)

Perhaps you did not have it configured correctly. Surely at least your boot times were noticeably faster?
