SSD's.... why so EXPENSIVE!?

I've almost purchased 1, sometimes 2 on several occasions...but had to stop myself because I just feel it's not quite the right time. They are extremely expensive and a new, better version seems to come out every few weeks.

By the end of the summer I might consider it :) I would like 3 or 4 32GB drives in RAID 0 for less than 70ish

You are right, but it's so tempting...

Hi,

I've seen a lot of people recommend SSD's... i mean i can get like a 1.5TB normal drive for the same price as a 30GB SSD!

I mean are they really good?
Any1 that has them please state that is there a huge difference in load times :D

Any other benefits of this extremely ridiculous price hard drive lol, please state.

Thanks for any answers!!

Because there's really not much to differentiate modern hard drives from each other, people often tend to get the biggest hard drive for the cheapest price. Thing with SSDs is they are not, at the moment, meant to be compared by £/GB, certainly not against regular HDDs, they are performance drives, which means it is how fast they operate not how much data they can store which matters. Similar to people buying Raptors, I suppose, until recently.
Plus, they're awesome, and your e-peen doubles in size for every SSD you own.

I had a OCZ 120GB one, sold it after a day.

My RAID 0 samsung F1 1tb's were just as quick and my uncles RAID 0 10k RPM raptor srives were faster :)

ur vertex must have been set up wrong or faulty. not that im trying to justify the price (they are too expensive still even though i went ahead and tried out a 120 vertex) but my vertex boots windows 7 in less than 20seconds (including instant desktop which is ready to use) and also made my game loading times 3x shorter on average (some games are less/more cpu bound but there is always a noticable increase on the games I've tried thus far), not to mention the lightning rapid responce from general windows 7 usage and faster loading times for applications (eg. Photoshop CS4 64bit loads in 2seconds max)

ok so heres the deal. I would say: If there is something else in ur pc thats going to give u a noticable increase for the same money (perhaps multiple upgrades can be had for the same money hence a massive performance leap) then go with them. If like me you don't feel you need an upgrade on any other part of your pc then go for a SSD, but I would say 60GB minimum (or multiple 30GB if they can be had cheap enough), I personally went for the 120GB because I wanted to have the majority (all atm) of my games installed on it too. While this wasnt "needed" its a nice addition. Its a lot of money and they WILL come down probably at the end of the year since now they have moved to 32nm production on the flash memory that is used to make the SSDs. Though I doubt we'll be seeing that 32nm stuff until early next year, or late this at the earliest.

Not got any shots of it 'vs' my spinpoint F1's in RAID 0 or agaisnt my uncles 10'k raptors in RAID 0 but i have a shot of the drive in my photo bucket acount :

LOOOOOOOOOOOOL forgot i did this, here it is 'vs' a PC World own brand HDD

And you were not impressed with that? :/ Average read nearly twice the speed and access times 1% of the 7200rpm drive?

Don't know why the prices of SSDs have gone up, but last week I ordered a 60GB Vertex from a German store at €180 = £160. Glad I did because this week the same drive at the same store is now €229 = £203.

and also one of the cheapest ssd's on the market
anyone who is waiting for the price of gb/$ to go down will probably be waiting a long time as these are still vastly considered to be a luxury item.

Ermm it already has went down a lot, the technology is warming up for some serious price drops, and demand is increasing every day because customers are seeing how nice these are. At the same time there will be a large demand for computers in the end of next year, when the recession stops, and that will coincide with 500 GB SSDs that will cost roughly what a 500 GB drive cost when they launched, and what i paid for one.

The prices of SSD are going up. I think I got lucky getting my OCZ drives for nearly a £100 cheaper a month ago.

I have the Apex OCZ in Raid 0...it's really fast! I find loading and closing apps really quick and gaming is awesome. Better than my raptors any day of the week!

well, my 4 32GB patriot warp drives cost me £375 roughly, my 2 Samsung 64GB drives cost £200 (and then one broke on me so i use the remaning drive for storing small files on) and the most recent drive that i have, the 128BG samsung cost £270 (ish) so give or take it's cost around £850 including P&P etc... so yeah they can be quite expensive (god help me but i could'nt stop myself from buying them) but the performance of the drives is out of this world in comparison to regular drives, next upgrade should/might be an i7 build using the Asrock Supercomputer Motherboard with Instant Boot, or the best AM3 Quad core since this is primarily a gaming system (i've not made my mind up yet)
