SSH connection help (firewall issue?)

I've been using Putty to connect via ssh to a virtual server I have where a couple of web pages and databases are stored - just for my own experimenting really.

I've tried to do the same today in work and it won't connect at all so I thought initially maybe it was a proxy issue.

However, I did a proxy test online and it appears that is not the issue. Also a command line entry shows no proxy is in place.

I was thinking maybe it was a firewall issue, such as the security people have blocked port 22? Do you think that may be the problem? Anything else I can check first?

Oh and I can't even ping anything, it just times out, despite the fact I have full internet access through a browser.

I've searched through ipconfig /all and tried some of the different options such as default gateway and WINS server but with no success.

Corporate Firewall, any IT Dept worth there salt will block everything from your machine to the outside world unless there is a business case to unblock a port.

Have a look at, should be quite easy to tell what ports are open.

You will most likely need to use the proxy function in PuTTY. HTTP usually does the trick.
