Hey all,

I'm after a quick large storage drive for my games and also for photo shop, premiere pro etc.

I was going to get a 1tb wd caviar black which is on offer this week, however I'm wondering if a hybrid drive would give me better performance?

I've seen the 1tb seagate SShd is a similar price also on offer but sold out.

Which of these drives should I go for, or is there something else for around the same money that I should be looking at?

Cheers

I personally have a 250GB SSD for programs and a 1TB SpinPoint F3 for games.

If you are sticking both on one, i'd go for an SSHD if those are your only two options. But it rather depends on how much you can get each for. New WD blacks must be reasonably quick (in comparison to regular HDD's) I should imagine...

If you have an Intel setup (Z68 or later) have you considered installing your OS, programs and games on an HDD and then using a 64GB SSD as a Smart Response / Rapid Storage Tech cache drive? That is what I ran previous to getting my new SSD. It worked rather well :)

cheers for the replies guys.

I'm on AMD and using an ssd for windows and a WD blue for storage.
I'm after a large drive really and cant afford a high capacity ssd so after the best performing hdd possible.

Read good things about the WD blacks which is my its an option but just wondering if a sshd would be better?

cheers.

I have a Seagate 750gb SSHD and it's great. The boot time is very quick on Windows 7 compared to my HDD and I will be getting a 2tb from an online retailer for £92.99

I guess another thing to consider is the use of the naming model "Black", "Red" "Green" etc.

There has been tens of models of blacks over the years each with improved speed, reliability, heat, efficiency and noise.

For example there is currently two models of 4TB and 3TB blacks on the market. There was a new models released in the last two days.

4TB Black WD4003FZEX
4TB Black WD4001FAEX

See below spec sheet

http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-771434.pdf

Both of these drives have only entered the market recently but have different performance.

I guess the point I am trying to make is don’t group all Black drives in the noisy and hot category until there has been a detailed review on each particular revision.

I am currently considering the new 4TB Black WD4003FZEX (just released) which boasts 171MB/s. I am going to be using it as a Steam drive to future proof me for my ever increasing collection of games.
