ST 185

Its 1165KG. Mine cost 8000 in metalic black with privacy glass on an 06 plate it had done just a bit over 8000 miles. Still got a years warranty sooo ill guess id rather have that than a french car w/o a warranty :p

Maybe so :D but its still slower than my 182 :D

That being said, i still really like them :)

If you bought one new I think the warrenty would tempt a lot of people. Sure you could do it yourself for cheaper, but voiding the warrenty on a new car seems a little silly. This is assuming its a 3 year warrenty, I know a lot of places only give a year. If outside the warrenty period, I'd definatly just DIY it. For the same money you would get much better results, that or get the same results MUCH cheaper.

Still amazed that its ~1.2tonne. Thats not far off the accord!

Ford should have been offering these a year ago, not now as in my opinion it's too late, all the new generation of hot hatches are out and the fiesta is starting to show it's age.

That said, the ST weighs 1160kg, or one person more than the 'uber lightweight stripped out practically a lotus elise 1*2', even after the upgrade they'll still be quicker, but not by much and certainly not noticable enough on the road.

Putting the performance aspect to one side, would this be considered a modification in the eyes of insurance companies? Seeing as now this is an optional extra on a new car and is a manufacturers option.

I don't own one but I'm just curious as to how this would work.

Of course. The original specification of the car has been changed, so the insurers will want to re-assess the risk (aka screw you for more money).

just get a power flow exhaust, what, £300 and cams another £300 and you should be there or thereabouts without getting totally reamed by the dealer?

Not really comparable imho.

Some press release said:
The Mountune Performance Stage 1 package will retail at £1,435 (plus fitting) and consists of a high-flow air induction system, a high performance exhaust system including high flow catalyst and tubular manifold, and re-calibration of Ford’s potent 2.0-litre Duratec ST engine to produce 165PS.

The more powerful Mountune Performance Stage 2 package will cost £1,838 (plus fitting) and adds new camshafts and valve springs to the basic package to deliver 185PS.

Developed by Ford Team RS in a new association with Roush Technologies Ltd, which owns the Mountune Racing motorsport brand, these packages will only be available at specialist Ford dealers. The upgrades have a minimum of 12 months/12,000 miles dealer warranty up to a maximum of three years/36,000miles.
The upgrade kits do not affect the vehicle warranty and will be available from the selected Ford Dealers from March 1st 2008.

So firstly your shopping list will include:

Cat back exhaust
sports cat
sports manifold
revised induction system
ECU remap
Cams
Valve springs

Even doing it your way, 'on the cheap', you'd be looking at, what:

Cat back exhaust - £300
sports cat - £300ish
sports manifold - £300 ish
revised induction system - anything from £50 to £300 (like an ITG Maxogen)
ECU remap to suit cams - £300
Cams - £400
Valve springs - doubt they'd be changed on the cheap

Plus remember this has been developed by ford themselves, so for instance I'd have thought the exhaust would have had some decent development behind it rather than a 5 minute look under your car by the polish guy in the powerflow franchise :) (for the record, I have a powerflow exhaust, and one of the guys in the powerflow place is polish :) ).

Only bummer is if fitting really is extra as the stage 2 package will up the costs due to the cam change.

Then there's the all important warranty, the kind of people this deal is aimed at will see this as a big selling point.

Then you have resale value, do you want your ST with aftermarket stuff thrown on or an official dealer option pack?

As I said, Subaru have been doing this for years and whilst 2k for the PPP is a lot comapred to if you did it out of a dealership, it's still a bloomin' good option :)
